what i’m loving right now.

ombré lips.

For my birthday Erica got me this great dual lipstick from Bite, which is perfect for doing easy ombré lips.

Bite Beauty lipstick

It was so simple - I just did the dark (red) shade on the outside of my lips, and the lighter (fuschia) shade on the inside. It’s not as fancy as the ombré lips/tutorials I’ve seen on makeup blogs, but it does the trick. Voila!

ribbon hair ties.

ALSO a gift from Erica…thanks E ;)

Um, why didn’t anyone tell me about these things sooner?! They’re so much better than regular hair ties as they don’t break or leave creases in your hair. Not to mention they just look cuter in your hair and/or on your wrist.

vaseline spray & go moisturizer.

Ok – this stuff is a game changer. I’m slightly OCD about using body lotion every day, and Vaseline Spray & Go makes it SO much easier. I still love regular body lotion and body butters, but when I’m in a rush this is great for quick application *and* quick drying.

I’ve only tried the Cocoa Radiant one, which I love – it smells like cocoa butter!

Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer

roasted veggies.

Nothin’ fancy or new here, just good old big bowls of roasted vegetables. I’ve mentioned before how roasting vegetables (with lots of spices) is the best way to make them taste good, and lately I’ve been making big batches ahead of time.

roasted veggie prep

Smothered with some Annie’s Goddess dressing = perfection.

(I have a great guide to roasting vegetables on this post)

What are you loving right now? Any of these things?

it’s my birthday and i’ll blog if i want to.

I didn’t have a blog post planned for today because…well, it’s my birthday, and I gave myself the day off from planning. But I got that blogging bug! It’s part of who I am, what can I say?

So here are some random updates/thoughts swirling through my head on this March 18, 2014. Forgive me if it seems a bit scrambled (you technically have to, since it’s my birthday and all).

First of all, I feel the need to confess that I got my laundry AND my groceries delivered today, and not because it’s a “special” day. Even though it costs the same, it makes me feel pretentious.

My roombud Rachel left out gifts and a card for me last night so I had them to wake up to this morning. She’s the best! :)

My latest Huffington Post article was published yesterday. Read why I think asking/answering questions is better than giving/getting advice when it comes to dating and relationships – 10 Questions To Ask (And Keep Asking) In Dating Relationships.

It’s so so so so SO freeing not caring what other people think. I didn’t even realize I cared as much as I do (did). I’m still working on my people-pleasing tendencies, but I’m getting there!

I’m quite positive I’m addicted to my iPhone. Thinking I should work on that.

I want to start doing videos on GML. Whaddya think?

I refuse to call them “vlogs,” though. That word hurts my ears (and eyes).

Sometimes I wish I worked slower. I speed through everything, then end up doing more work throughout the day. Yes I’m productive, but sometimes it makes my brain hurt.

Whenever I worry about the future, I instantly look back at what God has already done in my life. He’s never failed and has only ever exceedingly blessed me.

Is it summer yet?

I should probably start looking into planning summer vacation(s).

Sometimes I think about writing a book, but the idea of it is way too overwhelming. That’s what blogs are for, right?

And sometimes I wish I was an E! News correspondent. Or maybe that girl that travels around the world partying. What’s that show called again?

I like crying. I really do. I don’t cry often, and it’s usually more out of joy than sorrow.

What can make me cry on a dime is thinking about how much I love my family and friends. Yep, I’m a sap.

Sometimes I entertain the thought of moving, but definitely not any time soon. I love my life in NYC.

My printer keeps making really weird noises but it’s not turned on…

Okay, it stopped.

I have a list in my iPad of my favorite movies. You know, just in case I forget.

I’m really excited to celebrate my birthday tonight!

I’m deliberating whether or not I’m actually going to publish this post, mostly because this was supposed to be “fun facts,” but it turned into straight up rambling…

Whatever. It’s my birthday ;)

Your turn! Give me a completely random thought/life update!

why i’m pro-selfie.

There seems to be a lot of talk about SELFIES these days. And when I say talk, I mean mostly…hate.

Don’t get me wrong – I understand the backlash against selfies. They can be inappropriate, come across as narcissistic, and be just plain awkward.

Mona Lisa Selfie

cat selfie

But for the seemingly harmless ones, why is there all of the sudden this liberty to shamelessly hate on selfie takers? What is it about selfies that makes people so damn angry?

Here’s why I don’t just mind selfies – I’m PRO selfie.

1. I wanna see yo’ face!

….plain and simple. I personally love seeing people’s faces rather than just their statuses, tweets, etc. Being able to visually connect with someone adds a relatability factor that nothing else can. And when I see someone’s selfie, I don’t think “wow, how narcissistic” – I want to encourage them for OWNING who they are.

Leah Guaglione

Jessi Green

(my friends Leah and Jessi – aren’t they beauts?)

2. in today’s age of social media, isn’t everything a “selfie?”

Think about it – every status, tweet, or Instagram is posted on your discretion – you get to decide what the world does or doesn’t see/learn about you. So in that sense, couldn’t the argument be made that every aspect of social media is just as narcissistic/self-serving as selfies? Sure, selfies are more in your face (literally), but I just think it’s lame for people who are on social media themselves to hate on selfies when they’re engaging in a form of “narcissism” too.

3. why care so much?

The act of dissing other people in any capacity is worse than the selfies themselves, in my opinion. I’d rather not take myself so seriously and post selfies than become pompous about something so frivolous.

I get it – social media has revealed a lot about society and culture that isn’t so pretty – the whole issue of narcissism probably being the main thing. But at the same time, this is the world we live in today. Instead of allowing it to affect us negatively, I think we should embrace social media as an opportunity to all have a voice and a story to share, and encourage each other in that.

So do me a favor – go ahead and find your angle, rock your best subtle duck face, and TAKE THAT SELFIE.

What do you think? Are you pro or anti selfie?

thankful thursday.

Today I’m thankful for…

^ Those things. ^

The start of my birthday week, which I wasn’t even expecting!

(My actual birthday is the 18th :))

birthday cake

Longer days, and other glorious glimpses of spring.

Becoming free from things I didn’t even know I needed freedom from.

When people like to verbally process a good meal as much as I do.

Early birthday presents manis.

gel manicure

How much I’ve grown and learned since this time last year.

The things I had to experience for that growth to happen.

Shark Tank, Buying the Bayou, and other reality TV shows that don’t completely deplete my brain cells.

Being able to remember a really great dream.

The giddiness of an upcoming weekend. Never gets old.

What are you thankful for today?

scenes from the weekend.

Weekends are always a fun time, but they’re especially great now that I live within walking distance of most of my favorite places in the city.

…like St. Paul’s German Church, where we had an amazing Liberty Sisterhood gathering on Friday.

Followed by a cozy late night dinner at the Meatball Shop.

Then after a few hours of bopping around we ended up at the “neighborhood club.”

In case you missed everyone’s Instagram updates, the weather in the Northeast this weekend was per-fec-tion. No winter coat necessary!

And springy nails to match.

The West Village was doing all sorts of showing off.

We brunched 13 people strong at De Santos.

I’m thankful that Rachel likes splitting meals as much as I do. Why on earth get one entrée when you can have two?

We kicked the new week off right with a visit to the gym on Sunday morning.

(Sunglasses to cover up the post-gym roughness, ha.)

With a weekly Quest Bar restock on the way home, of course.

Spring-ish attire, day two.

Dinner of lazy folk champions.

(This was actually really good!)

Last but not last is the most special part of my weekend. This is Ayanda, the adorable little girl from Zimbabwe that I’m so blessed to sponsoring through Children’s Cup.

I’ll leave you with some inspiration for the week ahead…

What was the highlight of your weekend?

#LEAN14 guest post: april on mindfulness.

Something that I really want to make sure I always convey when I blog about health & fitness is the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. To me, those are actually more important than physical health.

That’s when I was so excited when my friend April reached out and suggested a guest post on mindfulness. See below for more info about April, and feel free to follow her on Instagram.

Whether it is working towards a career goal, working towards a physical health goal, or a relationship goal, there are always numerous things calling our attention. It can be easy to get caught up in all of those aspects of life and forget to keep your mental/emotional health in check. Mindfulness can be used in large and small capacities to make a difference in how we manage stress, acknowledge feelings both pleasant and unpleasant, or just slow down and enjoy the moment. Essentially it is being present with your body and mind and not judging anything that you are aware of in that moment. For some people that means daily meditation but for others, small changes to every day life are enough to practice awareness.

When it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, eating right and exercising are always the first changes we make, but incorporating mindful exercises can help to integrate that healthy lifestyle as a whole. Not being present with our experiences, no matter what the experience is, means we are not fully living our lives. And lets be serious, no matter how great our bodies feel, a relaxed, confident and compassionate mind can really give you that extra boost.

Here are 5 ways to incorporate mindfulness into your every day.

1. Look at your food (Mindful Eating)

Too often we are rushing through meals. Take the time to really taste what are you putting in your body. Try not to get caught up in something else while eating like emails or Netflix. Notice the texture and taste differences in your food. Take slow and intentional bites and savor it. Slowing down your eating is also good for digestion. Bonus!

2. Deep Breathing

Learning to take deep breaths instead of shallow breaths can make a world of difference. Take some small stickers and place them in different areas around your home and workspace. See them as a reminder to take three deep breaths. This creates a physiological response of calming and requires a focus on the here and now.

3. Give yourself Compassion

One of the foundations of mindfulness is to be non-judgmental. This can be especially hard for women who tend to be very critical of themselves. First thing in the morning, take a look in the mirror and think something positive about yourself. When you get caught up in negative self-talk, say to yourself what you would say to a friend in the same situation. We deserve the same compassion and kindness we give others.

4. Body Scan

Our bodies can tell us a lot about how we are feeling emotionally or if there is something we are avoiding. Take time throughout the day to check in with your body. Notice if your shoulders and neck feel sore or tight. Maybe there is extra stress at work or you are avoiding talking to a friend about something. Either way, being aware of any discomfort or comfort in your body brings you back to the moment of being in your own body. And if there is discomfort, there’s perfect excuse for a massage!

5. Mindful Routine

Think of something you do every day that you do quickly or usually without much thought; for some this may be cooking, laundry or showering. Try being completely aware and present next time you do one of these activities. Pay attention to every detail of it. Notice what it takes physically for you to cut up vegetables or shampoo your hair. This can help you slow down and be more present for even the most mundane chores.

OR

5. Movement

This can be applied to movement for exercise such as focusing on muscles, posture and breath in order to properly execute workouts or focusing on simple movements such as walking. This creates conscious thoughts about moving your body rather than just going through the motions. Not only will it decrease risk of injury for physical health but create a more solid connection and awareness of what your body is capable of.

Integrating mindfulness is a process and it won’t happen overnight. It requires continuous practice. So making small changes to your day-to-day routine can be the easiest way to practice that awareness. Learning how to keep the distractions of our worlds at bay can provide great insight, gratitude, and inspiration. Most importantly it is an integral part of living a healthy lifestyle, the bringing together of the body and the mind.
