That was always the first thing that came to mind when I saw other bloggers using this condiment so-unappetizingly-called nutritional yeast.
After seeing it in the store a few weeks ago, I decided to finally give it a try. I mean, considering my health tank hasn’t exactly been at an all-time high, I sort of need all the help I can get.
Nutritional yeast is “a valuable source of high-quality protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, dietary fiber, and minerals.”
Or as I like to call it…
I was quite skeptical, but I really am loving it! 8 grams of protein per 1 1/2 tablespoons and a salty, cheesy flavor? Sold.
For the most part I’ve been eating it atop salads and veggies, but I can attest that it also makes for a rockin’ addition to New England Clam Chowder.
Have you ever tried nutritional yeast? Thoughts?

I was actually wondering about that stuff, too. It sounded interesting but wow, 8 grams of protein?! I need to get some of this stuff!
Thanks for clearing up what it is-you’ve convinced me to give it a whirl. Have a great day!
I could live soley off of nutritional yeast. I sprinkle it on EVERYTHING.
Thanks for sharing this! I have been seeing it on everyone’s blog - but did not know much about it! I am thinking it will be picked up in my next trip to the store!
I have never tried it- I have totally thought the same thing as you.
I’ve tried it and thought it was so-so (nothing phenomenal), but I love how much protein is in it! I’ll have to start looking for ways to really enjoy it.
I picked some up at the co-op a while ago and used it a couple of times, but I could never really taste it. any suggestions? maybe i’m not using enough?
Yeah, you need to use a generous sprinkle to pick up the taste! It seems weird at first b/c usually condiments like that are super strong, but nooch isn’t, so keep sprinklin’
You know I love this stuff
Glad you’re sold on it!!
I love the title of this post. I have often thought the same thing, and like you have thought about purchasing nutritional yeast. My only problem is I can’t find it!!!!
I found it at Whole Foods!! I’m pretty sure it was in the baking aisle, near the other yeasts.
I often THINK about buying- and trying- this stuff, but have yet to do so. But if you say it’s good…:-)
I just started using nutritional yeast (nooch as I like to call it) a few weeks ago. It’s great on eggs!
Ohh I haven’t tried it on eggs, that does sound delicious!
I keep seeing it pop up on every food blog, I am wondering if it’s worth a try (I had no idea it was cheesy though lol, maybe I will get it after all!)
Btw, I am hosting a giveaway today, if you’d like to enter
To be honest, I’ve been scared to try it. It just looks so unappetizing to me.
I love nooch! I sprinkle it on everything… popcorn, salad, eggs, pasta. I even have one at work and one at home. I get the nastiest looks when I bring it into the lunch room though! The word “yeast” really turns everyone off I guess.
hahahah yes the word “yeast” is definitely not conducive to something being appetizing
I have tried it and like it but it’s quite high in calories so it’s easy to go overboard..might as well just have real cheese!
I don’t think it’s that high in calories! Especially because one tbsp seems to go a longggg way…
Except I have a hard time only using 1 tbsp of anything ;-P
I’m so glad you posted this because I’ve been wondering the same thing lately! I was wondering what it tasted like and where to get it so I can try some! Did you find it a regular grocery store or did you have to go to a health food store to find it?
I found it at Whole Foods! Haven’t been able to find it at regular grocery stores.
that stuff gives me a headache every time I eat it but it tastes pretty decent
really? that’s strange, I wonder why!
I need to give it another try-I bought some but then was too grossed out to use it! Silly me.
I love NY! The first time I tried it, I forgot to add salt and it was really really plain. But after adding just a dash the cheesy flavor really came out.
I love nutritional yeast! I put it on salads, sandwiches and pasta. Yum!!
Oh, I’ve also thrown into into a roux when I was out of cheese once for a healthy “cheese” sauce! It was pretty good, especially with a dash of paprika, mustard powder and cayenne!
that does sound so delicious!!
I bought it a few weeks ago and tried it on pasta once - it was pretty good! I totally forgot I had it until now though!
where did you get it from? i can’t find it around where i live!
Whole Foods!
I love the yeast!! HAHA I have to say it’s pretty awesome on popcorn!
I first found out about the whole yeast thing when my roommate in college would add it to her popcorn. It actually was pretty good.
You’re braver than I am. I need to branch out and try new things more often
Love nooch! It’s great mixed with hummus as a creamy sauce, and even mixed into oats for a savory bowl. Glad you found it!
i’ve just bought my first packet too! i’ve only used it on salads so far…but it’s pretty yummy ♥
I always wondered what it was. I might have to give it a try.
I definitely need to try this…I’ve seen it EVERYWHERE!
I love nutritional yeast! For those who haven’t tried it, you can usually find it in the bulk bins at Whole Foods… try before you buy! I put it in homemade black bean burgers, soups, make vegan mac & cheese with it and sprinkle it on salads. And this is coming from a cheese lover!
I’ve mixed it in with my oatmeal because with the oats it tastes kind of nutty. I also used it in a potato soup once from Oh She Glows and it was great.
I was hesitant about it, too, but tried and have been loving it’s cheesy flavor on sweet potatoes and salads!
[...] chicken & broccoli mock’n cheese. A few months ago a shared a little concoction for mock mac’n cheese, which – if I’m being honest – was really just a way to use up yogurt that was about to go bad and the nutritional yeast I impulsively bought. [...]
