5 tips for {comfortably} wearing high heels.

If you’re anything like me, you love the look of sky-high heels, but your feet don’t always love how they feel. Still, you’re not willing to give up the glamor and the silhouette of stilettos in favor of more “sensible” shoes. Is there any way to fix this dilemma? Thankfully – after years of trial and error – I’ve found that there definitely is.

Whether you are wearing them in the office or after hours, there is no doubt that high heels look amazing. But if you want to avoid the health hazards associated with heels, such as bunions, hammer toes or painful neuromas (yuck), you’ve got to be smart with your shoe choice. You must also be willing to invest a bit of money and time to ensure that when you step out heels, you’re not also stepping into potential trouble.

1. invest in good shoes.

You don’t have to empty your bank account to buy Jimmy Choos, but you shouldn’t go totally cheap where your footwear is concerned, either. By making the financial investment in good shoes that feature good quality materials and expert workmanship, you will save money over the cost of continually replacing low-quality shoes.

Walking in stilettos that fit well can already be a challenge. But walking in ill-fitting stilettos is torture that can result in permanent damage to your feet. Good quality shoes sold by reputable brands are more likely to fit well. By purchasing well fitting shoes, you will also spare yourself pain and potential expensive visits to the podiatrist.

2. prepare your shoes for actual wear.

Just as your clothes fit better when they’ve been altered to fit your actual proportions, your shoes will fit better and feel better if you cushion and customize them with padded insoles and shields to protect the balls of your feet and the backs of your heels. To determine where padding and alteration is needed, wear your shoes for an hour once you take them home from the store. Make a note of where you feel pressure or rubbing and purchase cushioning for those areas.

The last thing you want is to take a tumble wearing stilettos. To prevent that from happening, scuff up the soles to provide a bit of traction. You can also purchase grip soles to apply to the bottoms of your shoes. Be sure that you don’t intend to return your shoes before you do this, however, as the store will be highly unlikely to accept them.

3. practice is a must.

Walking in high heels is an art form. You don’t have to pretend you’re on the catwalk, but a modified version of the model step is a good approach. To acclimate your muscles to the long-legged model stride, practice walking in your shoes in the privacy of your own home. Practicing yoga can also help to strengthen your core muscle and adjust your sense of balance so that you can wear heels gracefully. All that practice will also help you “fake it ’till you make it” - you’ll look great once you step out in public wearing your heels even if you feel silly at first.

4. give your feet a break.

Just because Carrie from Sex and the City wears heels 24/7 doesn’t mean that you have to…nor should you try. Instead, vary the heel height of your shoes from day to day. If you must wear stilettos for several days in a row, give your feet several days off as soon as possible. Walk around the house barefoot. That will help stretch your calves in addition to giving your feet a break from the strain of wearing heels.

You can also give your feet a break during the day. Try to wear flats on your commute to work, whether you are driving or taking public transporation. Once you’re in the office, try to sit as much as possible to give your feet a break.

5. fashionable alternatives to stilettos.

If you like the look of heels but need a bit more support, consider platforms or wedges. Your legs will look just as great, but the balancing act is not nearly so difficult. Boots with a chunky heel are another alternative to stilettos that looks great with skinny jeans and skirts.

#LEAN14: 5 tips for a perfect smoothie.

Over the past couple of months I went from being “eh” about smoothies to drinking at least one every day. To me, smoothies are the best way to get the health benefits of fruits and vegetables while also being, fast, easy, and delicious.

The perfect smoothie, though, requires a few simple techniques that can make all the difference in the world. Here are my 5 tips for a perfect smoothie.

1. if you’re going to use greens, don’t overdo it.

This is the number one mistake I see people do - they assume “the more greens, the better.” While that may be true health-wise, your smoothie is going to taste like crap. If you actually want to enjoy your smoothies and keep up with drinking them, keep the greens to about 1 cup. If you want to cover up the flavor of the greens all together (I always do), add at least 1/2 of a banana to the mix.

Classic Green Smoothie

2. use a FROZEN banana (and/or berries).

On that same note, I always have at least 1/2 of a frozen banana in my smoothies. Bananas (and berries) add great flavor, but when you use them frozen it makes your smoothie thicker, creamer, and more filling.

3. use almond or coconut milk.

I prefer milk over water as the liquid in my smoothies, but I’ve found that a lighter milk works better to blend everything together without being overbearing. I’m not a fan of skim milk (AKA foggy water), but almond milk and coconut milk are light, creamy, and add great flavor.

4. use a good blender.

For a long time I thought I didn’t like smoothies, but the main reason I wasn’t enjoying them is because I was using a weak smoothie maker. Texture and consistency are KEY when it comes to a tasty smoothie. I’m a huge fan of my NutriBullet and highly recommend it. I’ve also heard great things about VitaMix (although that’s much pricier).

What I love most about the NutriBullet is it doesn’t just blend – it adds air to the smoothie, which makes it creamy and fluffy – almost like a milkshake.

5. keep it simple.

Another reason I didn’t used to love smoothies is because I was overdoing it with the components I added. You’d think that all fruit tastes good when blended together, but that’s not always the case. Now I highlight whatever flavor I’m going for (tropical, banana, berries, dessert-ish), never using more than 2-3 different fruit combinations.

For example, here are my two favorite go-to smoothies:

Simple Morning Energy Smoothie

  • 1 cup spinach or kale
  • 1 frozen banana
  • handful frozen berries
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 2-3 ice cubes

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana “Dessert” Smoothie

  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2-3 ice cubes

#LEAN14 guest post: april on mindfulness.

Something that I really want to make sure I always convey when I blog about health & fitness is the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. To me, those are actually more important than physical health.

That’s when I was so excited when my friend April reached out and suggested a guest post on mindfulness. See below for more info about April, and feel free to follow her on Instagram.

Whether it is working towards a career goal, working towards a physical health goal, or a relationship goal, there are always numerous things calling our attention. It can be easy to get caught up in all of those aspects of life and forget to keep your mental/emotional health in check. Mindfulness can be used in large and small capacities to make a difference in how we manage stress, acknowledge feelings both pleasant and unpleasant, or just slow down and enjoy the moment. Essentially it is being present with your body and mind and not judging anything that you are aware of in that moment. For some people that means daily meditation but for others, small changes to every day life are enough to practice awareness.

When it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, eating right and exercising are always the first changes we make, but incorporating mindful exercises can help to integrate that healthy lifestyle as a whole. Not being present with our experiences, no matter what the experience is, means we are not fully living our lives. And lets be serious, no matter how great our bodies feel, a relaxed, confident and compassionate mind can really give you that extra boost.

Here are 5 ways to incorporate mindfulness into your every day.

1. Look at your food (Mindful Eating)

Too often we are rushing through meals. Take the time to really taste what are you putting in your body. Try not to get caught up in something else while eating like emails or Netflix. Notice the texture and taste differences in your food. Take slow and intentional bites and savor it. Slowing down your eating is also good for digestion. Bonus!

2. Deep Breathing

Learning to take deep breaths instead of shallow breaths can make a world of difference. Take some small stickers and place them in different areas around your home and workspace. See them as a reminder to take three deep breaths. This creates a physiological response of calming and requires a focus on the here and now.

3. Give yourself Compassion

One of the foundations of mindfulness is to be non-judgmental. This can be especially hard for women who tend to be very critical of themselves. First thing in the morning, take a look in the mirror and think something positive about yourself. When you get caught up in negative self-talk, say to yourself what you would say to a friend in the same situation. We deserve the same compassion and kindness we give others.

4. Body Scan

Our bodies can tell us a lot about how we are feeling emotionally or if there is something we are avoiding. Take time throughout the day to check in with your body. Notice if your shoulders and neck feel sore or tight. Maybe there is extra stress at work or you are avoiding talking to a friend about something. Either way, being aware of any discomfort or comfort in your body brings you back to the moment of being in your own body. And if there is discomfort, there’s perfect excuse for a massage!

5. Mindful Routine

Think of something you do every day that you do quickly or usually without much thought; for some this may be cooking, laundry or showering. Try being completely aware and present next time you do one of these activities. Pay attention to every detail of it. Notice what it takes physically for you to cut up vegetables or shampoo your hair. This can help you slow down and be more present for even the most mundane chores.

OR

5. Movement

This can be applied to movement for exercise such as focusing on muscles, posture and breath in order to properly execute workouts or focusing on simple movements such as walking. This creates conscious thoughts about moving your body rather than just going through the motions. Not only will it decrease risk of injury for physical health but create a more solid connection and awareness of what your body is capable of.

Integrating mindfulness is a process and it won’t happen overnight. It requires continuous practice. So making small changes to your day-to-day routine can be the easiest way to practice that awareness. Learning how to keep the distractions of our worlds at bay can provide great insight, gratitude, and inspiration. Most importantly it is an integral part of living a healthy lifestyle, the bringing together of the body and the mind.

3 thoughtful {personalized} gift ideas.

Even though the holidays are over, I’m constantly thinking of thoughtful and unique ways to give gifts to my loved ones. I have a handful of birthdays coming up, and I’m sick of getting the same old gifts for everyone!

Here are a couple of fun gift ideas that are unique, thoughtful, can be personalized, and also won’t break the bank.

1. for your best friend - a personalized journal.

This is something Jessi actually got me a few years ago, and it made me feel so special. I know I’ll have that journal forever, so went from being a great gift to something that will hold memories.

There are a handful of website that make custom journals, but I especially love the options Minted.com has.

2. for your family - professional photographs.

Especially if you’re a 20-something like me who no longer lives at home – you probably know how much your parents and grandparents ask for photos of you.

It can seem a little conceited to send someone a photo of yourself as a gift, but it really will mean a lot to your family who misses you! There are some really affordable photo studios (and here are even more photo coupons), so even one great photo with a pretty frame can be really meaningful.

Wherever you may be in life – starting a new job, engaged, pregnant – capture the moment for your family members to feel like they’re a part of it.

3. for anyone – a custom phone cover.

I did a review of RuMe custom iPhone covers last year, and I still use mine today. Our phones have become our number one accessory, so why not surprise someone with a phone cover that is uniquely theirs?

{natural} smokey eye makeup.

Lately I’ve really been enjoying experimenting with new makeup looks. I don’t know if it’s because of the holidays or just getting bored with my normal routine, but trying new colors, brands, and makeup techniques is just so much fun!

I often go with a dramatic smokey eyes for a night out, but I recently saw this tutorial on Refinery29, and it inspired me to try a more natural take on my favorite eye makeup look.

To achieve the look was pretty simple. I used three shadows -

FOXY and FAINT from the Urban Decay NAKED Basics palette:

and the bottom, golden shade from the Almay Intense i-color Bold Nudes kit (for blue eyes):

6 steps to a natural smokey eye:

1. I started by applying a base of the Faint shade on my eyelids with a medium-sized eye shadow brush.

2. Then I used a smaller eye shadow brush to apply Faint under my eyes.
It’s trickier applying to the bottom (which is why you want to use a smaller brush) – try to keep it from going past the ends of your eyelashes to avoid looking like you have a black eye.

3. Then I went over the top and bottom with a light dusting of the gold-toned Almay shadow.

4. I applied the final, lightest shade (Foxy) right under my brow for an extra pop.

5. Eyeliner is optional. I used a light brown (Cover Girl) liner.

6. Finish the eyes with mascara. I swear by Rimmel Lash Accelerator.

To make the look complete I kept it simple with some bronzer and a nude lip.

5 ways to accessorize your look this winter.

It’s getting a little chilly out there, isn’t it? You’ve probably pushed aside those summer clothes, organized the fall fashion, and are getting ready to change it up with your winter look. This is always the hardest season because you’re somewhat restricted since you’re so bundled up. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t look good even when it’s freezing cold outside. Here are some great ideas and suggestions for bringing out your unique style by way of accessorizing your look during the winter time.

1. find balance and symmetry

Go for a mirrored look between the left and right. Consider purchasing double of your accessories so you can create symmetry in your fashion. Try using a color picker tool to understand complementary colors, or do some homework into color harmonies. It’s subtle, but creating symmetry and a bit of balance is extremely pleasing to the eyes (since the human mind generally looks for these types of features in nature and with people). The key with color balance is making sure not to overdo it, as it can easily become too distracting.

2. go old school

Do it up like Macklemore and head on down to the thrift shop. You can find a ton of accessories for great prices – not to mention that vintage pieces are always “in.” Plus you don’t have to worry that you’re going to match every other girl when you’re out and about. You could probably even piece together a whole wardrobe for less than what you’d spend on a few pair of jeans at the mall. Going old school will definitely have you looking unique and keep that hard earned money in your purse.

3. show some color

Switch out those tired earrings for something new and colorful. Try matching your fashion choices with colored diamond earrings (hint, hint, a great Christmas gift) or mixing it up with a combination of antique and modern jewelry. Better yet – why not change up your hair color to match these accessories? It’s the winter and it’s almost New Year’s. Why not go ahead and start a new trend before the year begins? I’ve actually been considering a hair color change recently, but we’ll see…

4. find a love for scarves

There’s no denying that scarves are probably the fashion accessory when you’re all bundled up in a coat. Not only is a scarf practical, but it can be quite fashionable if you take some time to learn all the different ways to wear them. I’d suggest picking up a few different scarfs in various colors, and try out some of the different ways to wear them. And if you’re feeling DIY, maybe even pick up knitting and make one on your own – it’s a great way to pass the time when you’re snowed in.

5. bear it out

Hot blooded and able to stand the cold? Why not go against the grain and wear some of your summer clothes during the winter time? While everyone’s wearing browns and blacks you could be rocking the bright yellows and pinks. You’ll definitely stand out, but isn’t that goal when it comes to fashion and accessories? Throw in some of your summer jewelry or mix in a scarf and see what you can come up with…as long as you’re not too cold.
