I should probably preface this little review by admitting that I’m not that person who is hard on film adaptations of books. I mean - let’s be real - I loved the Twilight and Hunger Games books and movies.
…ahem, anyone still reading…?
Anyway, the other night I finally got around to watching The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which I read last year.
After wiping the drool off my face from the sight of my dream stud Daniel Craig, I was quickly impressed by how well the film portrayed the characters and storyline in the book. I personally loved everything from the opening credits to the music, cinematography, and acting. I thought that Rooney Mara was brilliant as Lisbeth, and don’t even get me started on the nearly flawless chemistry between she and Craig/Blomkvist.
If you didn’t read the book, the movie will still make sense and is great on its own. I, however, am going to be grabbing The Girl Who Played With Fire ASAP so I can know what happens next…
Have you read or seen The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? Thoughts?

I loved it - right up til the last 5 minutes or so when they changed the whole ending. It just seemed so necessary. What, you didn’t want to either go to Australia or your budget ran out?? I actually read the 2nd and need to read the 3rd (along with Hunger Games and Game of Thrones….)
Yeah I know what you mean - always sort of annoying when they alter the ending. But for some reason it didn’t bother me too much with this…I felt like it still had a pretty good flow.
Did you like the 2nd book?
I did, but not as much as the first. I like the mystery of the first one and there’s less of that in the 2nd. I think it would be more useful to think of the 2nd and 3rd books as really one book with a break in the place most likely to get you to buy the 3rd book. Those 2 are about one story while the 1st is a lot more separate if that makes sense. Still good and worth a read though.
The movie was so powerful, I loved it although it was disturbing at times. I want to read the books so bad, it is on my to do list.
I read all three books last summer. I then went out and found all three of the Swedish subtitled movies and watched those before the American version came out. I like the American version a lot better, maybe it’s just because it wasn’t subtitled.
And like it was already mentioned, I really hated that the ending was changed so drastically.
I liked the Hunger Games books and movie. I saw the movie before reading the books but felt the movie stayed right on track with the book. I’m excited for the next movie to come out next year.
I haven’t read the book OR watched the movie, but I’ve been curious about it. I didn’t know that they had changed the ending … that’s always frustrating, if you have an attachment to the book!
I loved it too - even after reading the books first. It was graphic, but so was the book. My husband was surprised by the one scene because he hadn’t read the book first, but I was already cringing knowing what was coming!
I’m not usually one to get on the popular movie bandwagon, but after seeing Hunger Games and subsequently devouring all of the books, I think I’ve been missing out. I’ve heard that the book and movie are pretty dark but I am curious and now that it’s available on Ondemand I think I’ll give it a shot!
This is definitely a movie on my must see list!
I completely agree with what you have said about the movie and it’s portrayal of the book. Living in Europe, I read all 3 in 2009-2012 in Spanish (they came out before the English translation) and was completely blown away by the intricacies of the plot. My question for you is have you seen the Swedish film adaption that was made in 2009? Subtitles aside, the movie is quite fantastic and just as good a portrayal of Larsson’s book!
Loved all three of the books - the third was my favorite. I actually kind of liked the Swedish version of the first movie better; because I thought it stuck better with the overall feel of the book. Didn’t mind the subtitles on this one.
I’ve actually had the Swedish version on Netflix for about a month now, will have to watch!
I haven’t yet watched the movie b/c I wanted to have the book read first. I read the first book and then immediately went into the second and third, so now I’m waiting until I’m done with the 3rd to watch the movie…something I’m dragging way out b/c I can’t bear to have it all end. Personally, I think the second book is a necessity. There is so much that we don’t know that gets blown wide open in the 2nd/3rd books. That said, you don’t know what you don’t know and until you read the 2nd book, you just don’t realize how much more there is to the story. I am a HUGE fan of the dragon tattoo series and I hope with all my heart that someone finishes the manuscript for the fourth book that wasn’t finished before Larssen’s death. I haven’t read The Hunger Games, but I’m starting to get that itch lol!
