the hunger games?

It’s been almost a year since I first heard about hype that is The Hunger Games, and - with the movie coming out next month - I’m thinking about finally buckling down and reading it. Jessi’s copy has been sitting on my dresser for a couple of months now, but the thought of actually opening the book is sort of giving me anxiety.

I think it’s because I generally hate most forms of suspense and competition. It just doesn’t entertain me. But at the same time, if I didn’t give into the hype of things like Twilight or Pinterest…well, I’d still have boring and realistic expectations of life. Who says I can’t marry a vampire and live in an exposed-brick loft while making a living out of DIY and baking peanut butter cookie dough truffle cake pops all day??

Ahem.

But seriously…HELP! Give me your best reason why I should (or shouldn’t) make the clearly life-altering decision of reading The Hunger Games.

Thanks in advance, you trendy little bookworms, you.

  • it is an amazing story. One downside when you finish the first book you just want to read the other two.

I was not really in to reading the Hunger Games so i got the audio books at my local library and i could not stop listening to them.

Real go read about Katniss you will not be disappointed.

  • I really enjoyed it - and was skeptical at first. Just do it! Or wait for the movie, your choice ;)

  • Bri

I just finished the second book yesterday in almost one sitting! It’s hard to give in to something surrounded by such hype but I promise this series is worth it!

  • Liz

read it! you won’t be able to put it down! I was definitely not originally a fan of adventure/competition novels, but i absolutely devoured the first two books in this series. and not for nothing, after twilight, i was relieved to read some young adult fiction with a strong and complex female protagonist.

  • It’s a great story, and just different. Plus, it’s a fairly easy read. Do it!

  • Allie

If I’d had the time I would have read this is one sitting. The best book I’ve read in a long long time.

  • They’re decent books. I’ve only read the first (I did it wwwayyy back before all the hype) but I’d say they’re worth giving a try.

  • You’ll fly through it in no time- it’s such an easy, mindless and entertaining read. DO IT. :)

  • It’s a great story. I hadn’t read a book in more time than I’d like to admit, and I read it in about two days. And the main character, Katniss, unlike Bella Swan, is actually a strong independent female that I think you’d really like. Bella just makes me want to throw the Twilight book across the room!

  • Carrie C

It was definitely an entertaining read. I still have not read the third book, but one of the main things I love about the series is that the main character is a strong female that stands on her own. Yes, there is a little love triangle in the book, but she’s not sitting there gushing and fawning all over the guys the whole time. She’s kind of indifferent, which is unusual for books in that teen genre. Give it a try. :)

I never thought I’d like these books, especially after hearing the synopsis, but I’m so glad I did. Best series I’ve read in a long time…maybe ever. Strong heroine + love story + easy to read all 3 in 3 days. Enjoy!

  • The Hunger games is the best book I’ve ever read. The series is the BEST series I’ve ever read. You won’t regret it!

  • Kerri

The first book is good, the second is alright, got too bored to read the third. These books are written for junior high students and they read like that, easy and quick for a normal adult. Skip it, the movie will be enough. As far as series go give the Game of Thrones a try, or the Sookie Stackhouse books, there are more entertaining things out there… like US Weekly :P

  • As a middle school librarian part of my job is to read popular young adult books. These just don’t do it for me. I can’t make myself read them. Most of the kids and staff here love them though. Give it a go - I’d love to know what someone my age thinks about them!

OK I never comment on this blog but I HAVE TO.

READ IT!! It’s the best! It is so fun and exciting and dramatic and imaginative. You will fall in love with the characters.

  • Drake

Katniss is an absolute kickass chick, she is worth reading the books alone. They are also very well written for young adult books, and very imaginative and addicting! I’m in grad school right now so I can’t really do much reading for pleasure, but I blew trough the whole series in about a week and a half. My friends are always telling me I’m a book snob, but I can’t say enough great things about these books!

  • It took me a while to give in. I have never liked these type of books and the plot didn’t interest me at all. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down! I would say atleast give it a try since you already have it:) I am now on the 3rd and can’t wait to see the movie.

  • Lauren

When I decided to read the books, it was also because I’d heard the movie was coming out. What I didn’t expect was that I would love them so much! I honestly could not put the book down. I think you’ll love it :)

  • I just plowed through the second half of the book yesterday. AMAZING. I’m so pumped for the movie now. And in desperate need of the other two books. READ IT.

  • Audio book all the way! It’s quicker and if you feel like you are cheating read along using the book. :)

    • ooh interesting suggestion! especially b/c i work from home and could utilize audio books. buuut i this case i already have a borrowed copy of the book so will probably just buckle down and read it the old-fashioned way :P i’ll have to remember audio book options for the future!!

  • I LOVED the hunger games! I ready all three books so fast I could barely put them down. I am very excited for the movie to come out but as always I’m sure the books will be better!

  • I’m right there with you! I generally don’t read the trendy series books (i.e. Twilight, Harry Potter etc) but after seeing the Hunger Games trailer, I’m somewhat intrigued. Maybe we should both give it a shot?

  • Ali

the books were amazing! i don’t think it being a “trendy” books series should keep you from reading them! they have an amazing plot and you fall in love with the characters (expecially Peeta’s character!) who cares if everyone is reading them, if you enjoy them that is all that matters. As soon as you read the first chapter you will be sold. Enjoy :)

  • oh gosh, do it. I’m the same way.. I read it because I wanted to have it complete before the movie came out. I was hooked in the first few pages, and that never happens to me.

    get it. now.

  • READ IT! Just read it for the fact that you will get to choose whose side to be on…Peeta or Katniss!

  • Kimberly

It’s a must read! Read all three books in a week, really easy to read too!

  • Kara S.

READ ITT NOWWWWW! it’s actually very well written, and you really get to know the characters and their weakness/strengths etc. Its not like Twilight at all.

  • read it! I was skeptical at first, but loved it! and now I can’t wait for the movie to come out… ;)

  • BNW

They are wonderful…very easy reads and so MUCH better than Twilights lameness. First, Katniss is a much better lead. Second, its just a much more realistic post-apocalypse type setting (not biblical just post world breaking down due to lack of available resources, global warming, etc.). And the writing is legitimately wonderful.

  • I’d like to know the answer to this too! I’ve heard only good things…but haven’t managed to read it yet either!

  • I didn’t get why they were so popular until I started reading them. I quickly got it. I even got my mom and husband interested in the books. The author pulls you in right away, and keeps you captivated the entire time. Enjoy! :)

  • Kaitlyn Torres

read it! i was skeptical as well but i finished the 3 books in like 2 weeks. you get so invested in the characters! yes. do it.

  • Julia

Read it! The first and second books were awesome but the third kind of fell apart for me, especially the ending. But they’re definitely worth the read.

  • READ IT!! I was really hesitant at first. But, then a friend that shares similar tastes and “tells it like it is” told me it was really, really good. So, I picked it up and read in all in like 2 days (completely unlike me!)

REALLY good story. And, in a weird way, I think it could totally play out like that 200 yrs from now. It could happen! :P

    I hope you read it!!

  • I literally read that book in like 2 days. You will love it, I promise.

  • uhhh chemmm uuuhhh chemmm

okay, being the trendy little book worm that I am…
and since I gave you that stupid book and it gives me anxiety that you haven’t read it yet… then I will tell you why you should.

    1. The cover sucks, yeah we get that. duh. moving on. If we judged all things by their cover, I wouldn’t be in AZ right now.

    2. Competition/action books suck. Agreed. It’s not that. This book plays on all the emotions to be a human. If you are a human, you will feel something reading this book.

    3. Although I have one of thee busiest schedules… I found the book so thought provoking and entertaining I would read it while walking. I even walked into a pole because I didn’t want to put it down.

    4. I agree with the other comments… you will want to read 2, and 3. I am in book 3 right now and I am completely committed… and I fear commitment.

    5. I want to verbally process it with you, so stop being selfish.

    6. I hate when people hype books. People hyped redeeming love to me, and it was good, but I think it would have been better if it was not hyped. People hyped hunger games to me… and well, I still freaking loved it.

    7. God said you should read it. You can’t say no to God. (Okay, im not 100% sure if He said you should read it but I learned a lot about my own character and so yeah)

  • Oh my gosh, READ IT TODAY! I bought this book for my son, took a peek at it, and he didn’t get it back until I finished two days later. I’m on the second one now and it’s just as good. Read a chapter and see what happens….just make sure you have some time set aside because you won’t want to stop.

  • Nicole

Just found you through pinterest because of your colorful blondies, they look delicious. I just came across this post and had to comment.

I actually just finished this book yesterday and I bought it Friday. I read the book in 4 days! That’s how easy a read it is and how much I loved the story. I plan on getting the next book soon.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did when you do end up starting it!

  • I HIGHLY suggest you read them. Once you start reading you won’t be able to put them down! I bought the series on Friday and had finished all three books by Sunday night. They are SO GOOD!

  • [...] Games and could not help but recommend it to everyone I knew. My best friend Gracie Gordon wrote a post about her questions regarding The Hunger Games and my recommendation was … uhhh chemmm uuuhhh [...]
