like a movie.

People always seem to say, “life isn’t like the movies.” And you know what? I’ve always had a problem with that phrase, but never really thought about why.

Until now.

The Communication Studies major in me wants to defend that concept by saying how much movies set up unrealistic expectations for society, blah blah blah. I mean, obviously there is truth to that, considering the fact that I may or may not have fallen victim to wanting a vampire for a boyfriend at one point. And wanting to trade lives with someone across the globe. No big deal.

11.29.10.1

So, yes, I get it. Thinking that life is like the movies may in fact leave you feeling “let down” by real life. My problem with this thought process, though, is that it also makes real life seem a heck of a lot more boring and pointless than it really is.

Sure, life isn’t like what you see in the movies. But that doesn’t mean that it has to suck.

Look, I’m not trying to take away from the hardships and pain that are an inescapable part of our humanity. But I also think that we miss out on so much excitement and fulfillment in life by playing it too safe (myself very much included).

Go ahead and call me crazy, but I actually believe that some of the things that happen in the movies can happen in real life if we’d just be more open to them. You know, like talking to strangers. Not holding back words or tears or laughter. Not being so afraid of failure or what other people might think. I can’t help but think that it’s those actions that can result in the supposed “unrealistic” opportunities we think only movies have to offer.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic. But you know what? I’d much rather err on that end of the spectrum than live a life of mediocrity. I don’t want to be the type of person who relies on movies to evoke passion within me. I want to be someone who carries passion for life around with me all day, every day.

If your life was a movie, what would the title be?

time to wind down.

As much as I love how the holiday season is in full swing, I’m dedicating this entire day to vegging out.

Literally and figuratively.

After a weekend with some of this…

…and a whole lotta that…

…my body and soul need to wind down just a bit.

The plan?

It will be a good day.

How do you wind down?

deserving of thanks.

I guess it’s time for me to list all of the things I’m thankful for, right?

I often consider how grateful I am for the important things in life – a gracious God, a loving family, wonderful friends, good health, and a roof over my head. So for now, I’m going to take a moment to give thanks for those more…underappreciated things in life.

1. Beds. Seriously, what is better than crawling into a big pile of fluff and coziness at the end of the day?

2. Allergy medicine. I have so easily forgotten just how miserable my life was before Claritin D came into my life.

3. Texting. Although I do think that there are many instances where the phone call should take precedence, there are just some conversations that would never take place if it weren’t for text messages.

4. Cereal. What’s more satisfying than digging into a bowl of crunchy cereal with ice cold milk? Nothing, that’s what.

5. America’s Funniest Home Videos. It never fails when I’m in serious need of an LOL.

6. Tomorrow. I don’t know about you, but I take for granted the fact that tomorrow is always a new day. A fresh start. A second chance.

7. Cookies. No explanation necessary.

8. The fact that our electricity went back on this morning…shew! (a power-less house on Thanksgiving morning was not a fun thing to wake up to…)

9. Adobe Photoshop. Aka the reason I can put off getting a fancy shmancy camera indefinitely for now.

10. You. Yes, YOU! Although I have never lacked appreciation for my readers, I really do want to say thank you for being such loyal, sassy, and lovely readers!! I am so grateful for each and every one of you – both my fellow bloggers and those who are strictly readers – you. are. awesome 😀

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! xoxo G

repost: random acts of happiness.

Hello dolls! I am taking a last-minute trip out of state today, so I’ll leave you with a post from back in February. Positive reminders can never be a bad thing :)

5 ways to practice positivity.

I’ll admit it: Sometimes, I’m a glass-is-half-empty kind of person. It’s especially easy to get that way in the dead of winter when it’s cold, dreary, and there’s generally not much to look forward to other than work-filled weeks. But lately I’ve been realizing that it doesn’t have to be that way.

You see, life is always – I repeat always – going to have its rough patches. For me, even when things are going “perfectly,” there’s always a little something in the back of my mind that I can view as a source of anguish or stress. And I’m pretty sure that’s how it is for most people. But instead of focusing on life’s circumstances, I/we need to focus on our attitudes towards to those circumstances. Here are some of the things that have helped me change my attitude and practice positivity throughout the day.

1. Put time into your appearance.

9.10.10.11

How you look might not fix any tangible problems you may be facing, but it can definitely help with improving your mental and emotional state. I find that when I actually pick out a cute outfit and do my hair/makeup nicely, I feel confident, more positive, and ready to take on the rest of the day.

2. Take on one thing at a time.

We’ve all gone through those “when it rains, it pours” times in life. It’s so easy to try to fix everything at once, but that’s also a sure fire way to OD on stress (or cookies, depending on your drug of choice). When I have a lot on my mind, compartmentalization is key. While looking at the bigger picture isn’t always a bad thing, focusing on one thing at a time is often what helps brings down from the ledge.

3. Practice some no-stress ways to de-stress.

4. Think about something you’re looking forward to.

ThanksgivingFeast

Sure, not every day is going to have something exciting and fun going on. But maybe there’s something coming up next week or next month that is! Right now, I’m looking forward to the holidays, starting a new job, and the weekend being around the corner. See? I’m in a better mood already ;)

5. Talk to people.

Sometimes simply having a good conversation and relating to someone else is all I need to put life into perspective. We get so caught up in the chaos of life that sometimes we fail to cultivate relationships. But it’s those relationships that are key to…our humanity! Whether it’s a phone call with a friend or talking to someone in line at the grocery store – interacting with others can definitely spark some positivity in your day.

  • How do you practice positivity?

you only live once.

Oh hey, sweet ones!

Notice the new header? I’m pretty excited about it :) I did love the other one (Ashley did a beyond superb job – homegirl’s a genius), but ever since I made the shift to Girl Meets Life I wanted something more…fitting. Not to mention I enjoy changing up the style here ever once in a while. I hope you like it!

words to live by.

The phrase “you only live once” used to top my list of annoying cliches.

…not that I have a list of annoying cliches, or anything.

Now? Now those are words to live by. I certainly don’t, but I’m working on it. So…

Spend your lunch break crawling around on the floor with kittens (trying not to strangle them, as I so carelessly did…).

Eat pasta. The white kind. Full of delicious refined carbs that will spike your blood sugar and leave you completely unable to process insulin. Gasp.

Do something CRAZY….

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t that crazy, but it was kind of a big deal. Sorry babes, lips are sealed for now.

…to be continued. xoxo G

  • If you lived by the phrase “you only live once,” what would you do?
  • Seriously – what’s the deal with people skipping Thanksgiving?!

pro/con.

When making a difficult decision (and sometimes even not-so-difficult ones) I often resort to making a list of pros and cons. In fact, I just made one within the past 10 minutes. But it got me thinking – is making a list of pros and cons actually useful?

To find out, I’m going to….yeah, you guessed it.

PROS of a pro/con list.

  • allows you to think of aspects of the decision that you might not have thought of otherwise.
  • organizes your thoughts rather than having them all jumbled up in your mind.
  • helps you figure out whether a particular aspect of the decision is in fact a pro or a con.
  • when the list is complete, you can weigh the importance of the pros versus the cons, which can definitely be of aid. The bottom line is that pro/con lists provide structure to the decision-making process.

CONS of a pro/con list.

  • they very rarely change my gut feeling about something, which is generally more reliable than what any list can tell me.
  • pros and cons can easily be reversed, thus cancelling each other out (i.e. the con “I’’ll be lonely” becomes the pro “being alone will force me to grow as a person”).
  • when there are multiple alternatives to the particular decision, you essentially have to list the pros/cons of each alternative, thus resulting in too many lists and too much confusion.***
  • if you’re anything like me, you usually end up with the same number of pros and cons, which makes the decision even more difficult to make.
*** = if this entire post wasn’t evidence enough of my type-A personality, this is all the proof you need.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

So, where does this particular list leave me? Well, it leaves me a) continuously going back to my gut feeling b) realizing that it was in fact this list that led me recognizing that gut feeling and c) quite embarrassed that I’m currently making yet another list. WOW.

You have now seen read me at my craziest :) TA! xoxo G

  • Do you make pro/con lists? Why or why not?
  • p.s. yet another change is coming to GML later today. Stay tuned!
