what I want, when I want.

I’ve got to say that my favorite thing about moving out has been being able to do what I want, when I want to do it.

It’s the mundane things that I seem to enjoy the most, really. For example, I like to keep the news playing on the TV almost all day long. In the past I’ve always worried that it was too boring for everyone else, but now I can be in-the-know from Libya to Wisconsin, and nobody can stop me.

And sometimes, I don’t even bother to make the bed. And nobody can stop me!

Yesterday was chock full of “wiw-wiw” things. Like, since I was feeling lazy and hate wasting food, I drank a mug of coffee that was leftover from the day before.

Sorry, coffee snobs, but it still tasted pretty darn good to me.

Then, despite the decent amount of natural light I get in my apartment, I decided not to open a single curtain. Because who wants sunlight when they’re trying to be lazy??

Actually, despite the cave-like atmosphere, I did manage to be quite productive. I put on my big girl pants and assembled the TV stand I got from Ikea the other day. Within less than an hour, it went from this:

To this:

*Pats self on back.* Assembling the unit was easy and actually pretty fun. The tough part came when I realized that my TV weighs about 3 times more than the unit itself. I almost gave up completely before a lightbulb went off; I slid my coffee table over and lifted the TV up onto that first, followed by lifting it onto the stand. Genius, I know. And, as lame as this might sound, it felt pretty good to put together a piece of furniture all on my own!

Moving on, my dinner was pretty much the epitome of a what I want meal – massive salad bar action.

That’s one gorgeous salad, if I do say so.

I rounded out the night with some dessert and a good movie.

Bright Star is a love story set in the 1800’s, aka a least-favorite genre of film for the majority of society. But me? It’s a favorite genre, and I didn’t have to convince or argue with anyone to watch it. (Although, I can’t say I was crazy about this one.)

So even though I’m much more of a social, family-oriented person, independence really isn’t so bad. I have a lifetime ahead of me to be around/cater to others, so why not embrace my freedom and just be a little bit selfish for now?

Is your routine dependent on a spouse/roommate/family members?

And - be honest - is it gross to save leftover coffee?? :?

i reheat leftover coffee all the time haha! I even worked at starbucks for 5 years too.

I am so different from my past roommates. I love waking up early to make coffee and work out. They hated the fact I woke up so early. Now I live alone and i can wake up as EARLY as i want!

I’ve done the coffee thing, too. It doesn’t taste as good… but it’s not horrible!

My routine is somewhat dependent on my husband, but not completely. Sometimes we’re doing things together, other times we’re each doing our own thing.

i can totally live alone- i wOULD LOVE THAT actually- i am all about doing what i want when i want it! CONGRATS on the assembling of that stand.. that is one thing I could not do for myself.. no way jose.. saving leftover coffee is what i call.. being efficient

I would feel so accomplished if I put together a TV stand like that! Just cause it’s something we’ve never done before and so beyond the usual, ya know? I don’t know, hard to explain haha. I love when my roomies are gone and I have free time to myself. I think I would like living alone because you can go out and be social, but still have a place to retreat and relax!

get it girl! I am such a “damsel in distress” when it comes to assembling anything - I need a man (preferably a gingie or a daddy)

p.s. coffee is like pizza — totally just as good the next day.

The only time I ever drink leftover coffee is when I make a full pot and I will chill it in a container in the fridge, so I can make iced coffees at any time :)

And my routine is semi dependant on my boyfriend…but I am happy we are moving into a two bedroom, so he can have his “man cave” haha and when we want to do our own thing we can without being in each others way.

Girl I would DIE to live by myself! I can’t wait to be in college next year, and eventually get my own apartment (woo for housing not being required all four years!). I am such a social person, but I love having the whole house to myself. The only routine that really depends on others though is when I go to the gym. I always have to coordinate with the rest of the fam so we’re not all driving four times to the gym each day!

Slash girl I call that being thrifty! Save yo coffee, Imeann wouldn’t the flavor develop/become stronger overnight?;)

As long as there was no regular milk in it, seems fine to me! My habits are different than my current and past roommates. Some of theirs I could tolerate and some I could not. Gotta love college!

Leftover coffee is totally fine. I’d drink it - but I don’t have a microwave. Or a normal coffee maker for that matter (I use a french press). Also, I LOVE living alone and not having to make my schedule around anyone else (or have them judge me if I don’t do dishes Monday-Friday). Although, I do worry when I start talking to myself. ha.

Before I came back to school I had my own 2-bedroom apartment. I loved living alone. I could let the dishes pile up, I could hog the bathroom, and I can be as nude as I please! I could also have my boyfriend over whenever I want without any awkwardness ;)

Now I am renting a room off another person, but I want to get my own apartment so I am the boss!

I live with my two friends but our routines aren’t really dependent on each other so I still have a lot of independence. I love it!

Also nice job on putting together that tv stand girl! I always still get my parents to help me out with that stuff haha.

I live by myself and I love it! No one reprimands me if there are dirty dishes in the sink. I don’t feel silly if I walk around in my underwear. I don’t have to worry about crime/murder TV shows boring anyone. It’s pretty damn wonderful. Until I get bored ;)

  13. says

i would be proud of myself if i put that together, too.
after reading this, i’m excited to live by myself!!
and yesterday, i drank a cup of leftover tea from the day before. not gross at all. completely normal.

I lived alone for a year before moving in with my boyfriend, and I have to say it was one of the best decision I ever made. I would go so far as to say everyone who has the opportunity should do it! It’s great learning experience!

Of course, the best part is it “wiw-wiw” moments, like solo dancing in my pajamas, trying new makeup looks at 9:30 p.m. on a Thursday, and being free to indulge in a Project Runway marathon - to name just a few. :)

Congrats on conquering the Ikea unit!

I agree with you completely! Being a single girl on my own at the moment is a very selfish lifestyle, but I’m gonna embrace it while I have it because I know one day it will change.

I used to reheat coffee all the time. It’s faster than making a whole new batch. I have a keurig now though, so no need!!
My schedule is dependent on my mom. We share a car, so I need to plan things around whether I can drive myself somewhere or she can drive me. I’d rather share a nice new car with my mom then drive around an ancient used one. Plus I don’t have to pay for gas!

  17. says

since i’m living at school, my routine depends a bit on my roommate, my friends, and my boyfriend. but i make a point to make sure it mostly depends on me and what i want ;)

im not too sure id drink leftover coffee, but more power to ya :)

  18. says

I love your blog! I have been reading it for awhile but I just started my own.
I used to have three roommates! In one small dorm room. But now I have a whole dorm room all to myself. I love it!!

  19. says

Oh, hell no. I live by myself too and have found myself wasting SO MUCH COFFEE when I’d only drink a cup but make a pot which is enough for two or three cups… I often just heat some up in the microwave the following morning :-P it’s fine! So sad to just pour it out!

  20. says

    Naw, girl!
Actually what you should do (if you want) is put lefties in the fridge and then have yourself an iced coffee…or smoothie…much cheaper than Starbucks…aka *bucks$.

<3 Bright Star. Wrote my thesis on Keats and plan on writing my dissertation on him, too. He's my favorite! Second favorite = not caring!
