bobby pin sugar cookies.

We’ve all had our share of different teachers growing up.

My first grade teacher said “alrighty” after almost every sentence.

My second grade teacher was obsessed with cats (not that I minded).

And my kindergarten teacher? She wore what appeared to be an entire pack of bobby pins in her hair every day.

Up until last night, I never realized that that’s why our family favorite Christmas cookie recipe is called…

Bobby Pin Sugar Cookies

Yep, this recipe originated from my lovely kindergarten teacher (although, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t her who came up with the name). It’s one of the most basic cookie recipes out there – one that you just don’t mess with.

ingredients:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

directions:

  • Cream the butter and sugar, then beat in eggs and vanilla.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt, and gradually beat into the wet mixture.
  • Chill dough in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (the longer the better).
  • Roll out dough on a flour-dusted counter top and use cookie cutters of your choice.
  • Bake for 6-10 minutes at 375 degrees.**

**How long you bake the cookies depends on your oven because they burn very easily. I baked mine for 6 minutes and let them cool on the pan for 1 minute before transferring to a cooling rack. That left the cookies super moist…almost dough-like.

I topped the Christmas-shaped cookies with Christmas-colored sprinkles, naturally…

…and rainbow sprinkles for the “regular” cookies (which were especially soft and chewy). YUM!

Thanks for the recipe, Mrs. N! You rock those bobby pins ;)

What’s your family’s favorite Christmas cookie?

Any funny teacher stories??

Those look like the perfect sugar cookies, nice and soft!
I had the sweetest 1st grade teacher - she actually got married the year after I had her and I just remember our whole class going to the wedding ceremony, we all loved her so much :)

These sound awesome! I needed another cookie recipe to make tonight for my grandpa, I’m totally making these.
In my family, Christmas cookies are always, always, always shortbread. I think its because my grandma used to make them all the time. She decorated them with maraschino cherries and kept them in the freezer all year long. :)

One of my favorites, I’m not entirely sure of the name, but I think it’s Swedish tea cookies? They’re so light and flakey and delicious!

I had the same teacher for 1st and 2nd grade. I was in one of those classes where they have 2 grades in one class, but the grades split up and go to different teachers, then we also had a third teacher in the classroom who did things like math and music and such. But anyway, my teacher loved me in 1st grade and hated me in 2nd grade.

    Those cookies look delish!
I’ve had a lot of good teachers, but I think my favorite of all time was my 6th/7th grade science teacher. He was in his 50’s and former military, so he could YELL. I remember several middle school assemblies during those 2 years when we wouldn’t quiet down, he would yell, “ONE!….TWO!…” and we’d all shut up. He’d never gotten to three, thus, we were all terrified of what would happen if he did!
But seriously, he was an amazing teacher. Made science interesting for the first time ever. I remember we all had our teachers sign our yearbooks, and he wrote in my 7th grade one, “I’m looking forward to seeing if you’re gonna talk next year. You’re so quiet!” I ended up transferring schools, so he never found out. But I did start talking the next year. Haha.

My favorite cookies? Christmas spritzers and/or snickerdoodles! That’s so crazy about your teacher…I mean she could have AT LEAST worn fun bobby pins…like the kinds with ribbons and flowers attached ;)

I had a teacher once that was so intimidating that this kid Andy (I’ll NEVER forget his name because of this) actually PEED himself because he was too afraid to ask to go to the bathroom HAHA. Oh man. I shouldn’t laugh, that’s terrible.

Anyways! Happy holidays gorgeous! Enjoy baking and taste testing ;)

Decorating sugar cookies is my fave thing about Christmas! Something I discovered this year - roll the dough out on powdered sugar instead of flour. Keeps the dough from sticking AND makes the cookies even sweeter :)

Hi Gracie! I just started reading a couple days ago, and I really love the content I see here! Thanks for all the positivity and delicious recipes!

As for cookies, snickerdoodles and cookie bars (coconut, chocolate, nuts, and graham cracker crust) are my go-to cookies for the holidays. Can’t wait to try this recipe though!

I know i’m commenting on this a year later - but do you put the sprinkles on the cookies before you bake them or after?
