oh, hi!

I'm the girl, Gracie. Here at GML you can follow my journey of dreaming, working, eating, loving, dancing, and blogging my way through life in NYC.

We’ve all had our share of different teachers growing up.

My first grade teacher said “alrighty” after almost every sentence.

My second grade teacher was obsessed with cats (not that I minded).

And my kindergarten teacher? She wore what appeared to be an entire pack of bobby pins in her hair every day.

Up until last night, I never realized that that’s why our family favorite Christmas cookie recipe is called…

Bobby Pin Sugar Cookies

Yep, this recipe originated from my lovely kindergarten teacher (although, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t her who came up with the name). It’s one of the most basic cookie recipes out there – one that you just don’t mess with.

ingredients:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

directions:

  • Cream the butter and sugar, then beat in eggs and vanilla.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt, and gradually beat into the wet mixture.
  • Chill dough in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (the longer the better).
  • Roll out dough on a flour-dusted counter top and use cookie cutters of your choice.
  • Bake for 6-10 minutes at 375 degrees.**

**How long you bake the cookies depends on your oven because they burn very easily. I baked mine for 6 minutes and let them cool on the pan for 1 minute before transferring to a cooling rack. That left the cookies super moist…almost dough-like.

I topped the Christmas-shaped cookies with Christmas-colored sprinkles, naturally…

…and rainbow sprinkles for the “regular” cookies (which were especially soft and chewy). YUM!

Thanks for the recipe, Mrs. N! You rock those bobby pins ;)

What’s your family’s favorite Christmas cookie?

Any funny teacher stories??
