If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my fashionista best friend Nicki, it’s that there are no rules when it comes to fashion. Here are a couple of supposed fashion “don’ts” that you can proceed to completely rebel against, k?
Myth #1: You can’t wear white after Labor Day.
Truth: Rubbish! You can wear white whenever your sassy self wants to. Wearing white in the fall and winter months can actually be quite chic.

Tip: When wearing white during the fall and winter months, opt for sweaters, coats, and accessories (stay away from the white linen pants, pretty please).
Myth #2: Never wear black and brown together.
Truth: Not only can you wear black and brown together, but you should wear black and brown together.

In fact, I actually prefer mixing browns and blacks instead of wearing all one color. For example, I love wearing my black bomber jacket with brown boots, and vice versa.

Tip: If mixing with black, stick to one shade of brown – preferably a lighter/copper tone as opposed to dark brown.
Sorry fashion rule-makers, we’re on to you.
- What fashion rule do you tend to follow?
- What fashion rule do you hope is a myth?

I usually don’t mix black and brown unless the brown is lighter… but you are so much more fashionable than me and it looks great so that may change.
I usually don’t wear blank and navy either!
Yay, your site works on at work again. I had suspicions there really wasn’t any malicious content. I don’t follow many rules, mainly because mostly anything is a myth if you pull it off right. I wish “Don’t wear high-waisted pants” was a fact. Those don’t look good on anyone.
I don’t follow any of those fashion rules either. I feel like it if looks good, WEAR IT! Who cares what people think. Although, I do agree, you will never find me in a pair of high waisted pants!
i love black and brown! the worst is mixing blacks when they don’t match! THAT i try to avoid
Girlfriend, I am with you on all the fashion “rules”! I truly do NOT believe in following those super old thangs anyway. Same goes for mixing patterns and NOT matching handbag to shoes.
The only things I don’t do: Uggs, Crocs, socks with sandals, ponchos, actual running shoes with anything other than workout wear, gym clothes all day… Oh shoooo, looks like I have a lot of snotty little quirks about fashion.
“Same goes for mixing patterns and NOT matching handbag to shoes.” <— Amen! Already planned on those being part of the next installment
I agree with all of your "don'ts" - sans the Uggs (just because I can't quit my crochet ones!).
I LOVE, LOVE mixing black and brown together. It’s one of my favorite color palettes (I don’t wear many colors in general). I also mix black and navy blue together. And I don’t match my necklaces to my earrings. That last one always shocked the older female customers at the jewelry store I worked at in high school.
I couldn’t agree with you any more! I will still wear white, as long as I don’t look like I’m going to the beach and wear brown with black. One of my favorite outfits from last winter looked just like that first black dress/boots picture.
i just got brown cowboy boots and am so excited to wear them with black! woohoo!
No more short skirts once you hit 30. MYTH! Or at least I’m saying it is
I always mix brown and black together, especially in the fall. I LOVE both of your bomber jacket outfits.
I love wearing white! Plus, it matches the snow in the winter
I don’t really follow any fashion rules. At least none of the set ones. I love black and navy and I do love black and brown as well. I will never wear nude tights. Under no circumstance. I don’t care if you aren’t supposed to be bare legged in certain situations. I will wear pants instead. I hate nude tights!
OMG, Emily is so gorgeous! Thanks for the tutorial! I’ve never really been very good at the “smokey eye” and this vid will help!
My fashion rules that I adhere to are never to wear black and navy together. I really don’t like how it looks.
I love wearing white as well as black and brown together!
I love fall clothing! I really need to go shopping!
I always stay way to in my comfort zone with clothing! Your so out their and stylish! I love it!
I’m just plain and simple I guess!;)
I tend to think black and brown look hot together!
These posts are very helpful for a fashionably challenged person like me
I do not mix navy and black. It looks weird to me. I have a question for you Miss Fashionista :), I have a dinner gathering this coming weekend, we are going to a restaurant where the attire is dressy. My question is, is it too early to wear a sweater dress? It’s white, fitted, loose fitting turtleneck and I was thinking of pairing it with opaque tights and knee high black boots. Or is it too soon to be wearing the sweater dress? Thanks for these posts, they rock!
Hi sweetie! It is definitely *not* too early to rock the sweater dress. I suggest rocking black tights with it
And the boots! Sounds like a super cute outfit.

I agree, breaking the rules can give you great creative style. Love the self-example photos!
Thank you or sharing this with the world. You have more fashion cred than I, so hopefully people are more apt to believe you. BOTH of these fashion myths have driven me crazy for years now. Maybe it’s because I live in the South. I feel like Southern women are more scared to break “rules.” If I hear one more person at work say they can’t wear white anymore, I will scream.
Omgsh! I was talking to somebody that got to go to New York fashion week & she was saying all about how she saw a TON of brown & black mixed outfits. Gurlll, you got it goin’ on! Haha.
3 Quick Questions…
1. Where did you get those brown boots from?
2. Where did you get the bomber jacket from?
3. And a food question, where can I purchase cacao butter?
Thanks girl and have a great night!
SERIOUSLY i need you to come and dress me girlfrand!!! you are the most amazing fashionista EVA!!! I had no idea about brown/black!! love you!
I totally agree that you CAN wear black and brown together. I think neutrals go great with practically anything!
Black and Brown is one that I came to terms with about a year ago! Thank god!
I loved the smoky eye tutorial! I’m totally going to try her technique for our New Years party this year …
