#herestohome: kicking off summer at the Tasting Table Hamptons House.

If you follow me on social media you probably saw that for the past two Saturdays I was out east at the Tasting Table Hamptons House. They have a handful of events going on out there, and I was so excited to be a part of them! I was invited by my friends at Coca Cola Life, who was one of the sponsors of the events.

Rewind to two Saturdays ago, where Sydney and I headed to the summer barbecue event. It was everything you could hope for in a BBQ - burgers, hot dogs, great sides and passed au d’oeuvres, specialty cocktails, and of course Coca Cola Life.

And then this past Saturday, we headed back out for their Rosé tasting event. Once again, everything was exactly what you’d hope for in a summer party.

This time the food spread included oysters, shellfish, ceviche, and more.

They also had fun games set up outside like Jenga, ping pong, and corn hole.

Full disclosure - I didn’t actually drink the Rosé because we had to drive back to the city afterward, but I did have one too many bottles of Coca Cola Life 😛

These events definitely made it feel like SUMMER up in here, which I needed because sometimes the craziness of NYC makes you forget that. I loved being able to escape the city for a bit and just enjoy the warm weather, incredible food and drinks, and great company.

I can’t wait to be back out in the Hamptons soon! We’re heading to Montauk on Wednesday for a nice long 4th of July weekend.

What are your plans for the 4th of July weekend? Got any good summer BBQs coming up?

snapshots.

It’s Friday, woooo!

I’m off to a festival downtown with Sydney and friends, but thought I’d throw together a quick post recapping some of the past week. It’s been a pretty slow week for me overall, which I’m happy about because I have a crazy week (and few months, actually) ahead of me.

I mean, you know it’s a slow week when one of the most exciting things you did was get a mani 😛

That’s Red Carpet Manicure “Star Power.” Normally I do my RCM nails at home (it’s an at-home gel kit), but this time I brought the polish to the salon and they used it.

On Monday I had a bit of an “aha” moment before posting this Instagram:

I’ve shared before how it’s so easy to fall into the comparison trap, especially these days in the blog world where everyone has gotten so…professional. But I can honestly say I’m finally in a place where I’m confident about what GML has become, and I’m owning that realness! I’m also so thankful for all of you for encouraging me to just…be me :)

**********

Fast forward to Wednesday when my Community Group and I met, but this time we switched it up a bit. Sydney and I have been leading a group on Social Media & Blogging, and normally we meet at cafes around the city, but this time we met at our own private Breather space.

Breather has spaces all across NYC (as well as Ottawa, Montreal, Boston & San Francisco), and they’re essentially rooms that you can use for…whatever you want! Jessi and I have used them for everything from client meetings to photo shoots, to just somewhere to work during the day. You can rent the breathers for 30 minutes, hourly, or all day if you wanted to (and they’re quite affordable).

It was really nice having the private space for our group. We took the opportunity to bring tons of snacks, of course 😛

I’ve made a bit of a weekly tradition of going to Hu Kitchen after SoulCycle on Thursday to eat + work for a few hours. This time I got one of their MashBar bowls, and it was ridic. I made my own combo - it had a base of taro pudding topped with blueberries, strawberries, walnuts, and almond butter. With a side of coconut iced coffee = breakfast perfection.

(If you’re ever in NYC definitely check out Hu - it’s one of my favorite healthy “fast” food places.)

Today (Friday) I let myself spend the whole day working from home + cleaning my apartment. I also managed to squeeze a workout in. I’m typically the worst when it comes to exercising at home (I just don’t have the motivation), but I followed one of the workouts in the June issue of Shape magazine, and it was actually pretty great.

Are you good at (aka motivated enough) exercising at home?
Any fun plans for the weekend?

Almay Simply American Experience.

If you follow me on social media, you probably saw that I recently I went to a fun event here in NYC - the Almay Simply American Experience.

It all went down in one of my favorite parts of the city - the Flatiron District.

Across the country, Almay is celebrating the true spirit of American beauty. In partnership with the USO, the Almay Simply American Experience is honoring the women of the U.S. military and their loved ones. For every Simply American photo share, Almay is donating $1 for every share on social media up to $10,000. How amazing is that?
I loved getting my mini-makeover in the tour bus. I got my eyes done, and the artist used my favorite Almay Intense i-Color Bold Nudes for blue eyes. I’ve actually used this shadow palette for over a year now. It’s a great daytime look and really makes my blue eyes pop.

The event also had great snacks, a photo booth, and even a fun kissing both. No kisses were to be had for this girl, though 😉

It was also great getting to catch up with my fellow She Knows experts!

The Almay Simply American Experience may be coming near your hometown too! Find out what the other tour stops are here.

10 ways I live in New York without going broke.

Over the past few years I’ve gotten a ton of questions about how I financially manage living in New York. I’ve always shied away from doing a full post on this because I’m definitely no expert when it comes to money management! I’m still learning new things and facing new challenges every day. But, here are some of the tools and things I’ve practiced that have helped me so far. I think you’ll find these really helpful if you’re moving to/living in New York, or no matter where you might live.

10 Ways To Live in NYC Without Going Broke || girlmeetslife.com

1) Create a budget with categories for every. single. expense.
A lot of people cringe at the idea of having a budget because they think it’s too constricting. I’ve found the opposite to be true - I think that having a budget is extremely freeing because it’s about controlling your money, rather than letting it control you. Having a budget is basically YOU tell your money where it’s going.

I highly suggest using these budget forms from Dave Ramsey, or something similar. Getting it all on paper is key. Don’t worry about getting your budget perfect right away - it will take a few months to figure out which categories you can allot more or less money to. But no matter what, create a category for EVERYTHING - the more detail the better.

2) Track every dollar that goes in and out.
Once again - yes, this is tedious and can be annoying. But you know what’s more annoying? Not knowing where your money went and having to scramble for it last minute. I track every expense and income I receive (to the cent) in Quickbooks. Quickbooks makes it extremely easy to track everything, create a chart of accounts, etc. + and it’s a lifesaver for reporting your taxes (you can just process and print out reports straight from there). Another great (and free) option is Mint.com.

3) Use cash/debit as much as possible.
In other words, don’t spend money you don’t have. Obviously there’s a time and a place for a credit card, but Chanel isn’t one of them. I use my (one) credit card sparingly, and I try to use it only on the same things every month. This helps keep me from getting into the habit of using it flippantly/too frequently. Sticking to cash/debit really helps you make smarter spending decisions.

4) Pay your bills and other big expenses on the front end.
I know this isn’t always easy depending on when you get paid/when bills are due, but I do my best to make my big payments as soon as my paycheck comes in. So for example, every time I get a paycheck, the first thing I do is set aside my tithe, taxes*, utilities, rent, and whatever credit card payment I want to pay that month. That way I’m not scrambling later when those are due, and I know that any money leftover is “fair game” to safely spend on other things.
*I’m self-employed so I set aside my own tax money

5) Take advantage of referral programs.
I’m not sure about other places, but in New York just about every grocery service, meal delivery service, car service, etc. offers referral rewards (pretty decent ones, too). I’ve gotten dozens of vouchers, free rides, etc. from using these. Some examples: Uber, Lyft, Seamless, Munchery, Instacart.

6) Pick your “fun money” each week.
Something I hear so often is - “How do you go out to eat so often? How do you afford SoulCycle all the time?” My answer? It’s all about BALANCE. I’m constantly making conscious decisions on what I want to splurge on. So for example, this week I decided ahead of time that I want to take 2 SoulCycle classes, so I consciously am turning down dinner plans, and walking/taking the subway everywhere instead of cabs or Uber. Other weeks, when I know I have dinners lined up, I’ll do my own free outdoor workouts. Same goes for buying new clothes, pampering, travel, etc. I’ve found that as long as I keep things as staggered as possible (and still within my budget), it all usually balances out.

7) Embrace free entertainment.
There is SO much free entertainment to be found in NYC. I mean, you can pretty much just walk out the door and find it anywhere. With countless parks, piers, sight seeing, free concerts, museums, etc. you could spend days just wandering around having fun without spending a dime.

8) Have a roommate. Or 4.
This is kind of a no-brainer, but having a roommate (or a few) is pretty much the best way to save a crap ton of money on living expenses in New York.

9) Have a side gig.
Chances are if you meet someone in New York they either already have a side gig, or they have an idea for one. Networking in New York is huge, so it’s a fairly easy place to start something new that will catch on enough to make some extra income. That’s what I did with Speakable, and that’s what I started doing with social media projects (which has now turned into my full time job).

10) Accept the fact that New York is an expensive place to live.
Obviously this isn’t so much money management advice as it’s just my personal life advice. Yes - living in New York is more expensive than most other places. If you want to live here, you just have to accept that, make your budget accordingly, and move on. It may take some getting used to at first, but it isn’t impossible. And, in my opinion, the benefits of living in the greatest city in the world make the extra budgeting and money management 100% worth it.

305 Fitness review.

Last week I took a new fitness class here in New York called 305 Fitness.

A friend of mine is an instructor there and I had been wanting to take a class forever. I always put it off, though, because I’m not exactly awesome when it comes to choreography. A few of my other friends recently started raving about the class, so I figured it was about time to try it out for myself!

305 was definitely unlike any class I’ve ever taken, and it was SO much fun. Here’s some of the background info + my thoughts on it.

About 305 Fitness

It’s a high intensity, Miami-inpsired (hence the 305) full body workout. All classes are 55 minutes long, with a focus on high-intensity rhythmic cardio. Classes also feature sprint intervals, sculpting, and a stretch cooldown. They have an arms class and a legs class (I took the legs class). It’s the type of workout that is good for those who are looking to have more of a dancer’s body/physique.

Pros:

* It’s FUN. 305 is just a crazy good time. Most of the time it felt less like a fitness class and more like a big dance party. It’s definitely a great class to go to with a group of friends. In fact, for your first time I would suggest going with friends if you can - it helps take the edge off if you’re not exactly the world’s best dancer.

* It’s a killer workout. The class is pretty much non-stop for 55 minutes with a few small breathers in between (and the strength part, which slows down a bit). There’s a lot of big + high intensity movements so you’ll find yourself out of breathe a lot, but it’s so fast-paced that you just have to keep going. You’ll definitely be sweating at the end!

* No equipment needed. With the exception of dumbbells in the arms class, there’s no equipment needed! Just make sure to wear comfortable clothes (that can handle a lot of jumping and wide range of movement) and sneakers.

* Great music. Get this - each class has a live DJ in it. How cool is that?! I loved that aspect - it made the class that much more fun and felt more like being in a club than a fitness studio.

Cons:

* The choreography can be confusing. When the class first started, I remember thinking CRAP - there is no way I’m going to get this choreography. I ended up catching on enough to still get a good workout, but I still had to really pay close attention throughout the whole class. I’m sure after going regularly you catch on more, but because of that I don’t think 305 is a class you’d want to go to sporadically.

* Primarily cardio workout. With the exception of the (arms or legs) strength section of the class, 305 is definitely more of a cardio workout. The strength portion isn’t exactly intense either.

* Cost. Classes are $32 each, but the cost does go down if you purchase a package.

* Only 2 locations. So far there are only locations in NYC and Washington D.C.

The verdict:

I’m a fan of 305 Fitness. I think it’s especially great for someone that loves cardio but doesn’t necessarily like “normal” cardio like running or cycling. It’s the epitome of a FUN workout that doesn’t feel much like exercise at all. If you’re in NYC or DC, I definitely suggest checking it out!

Does 305 Fitness sound like a workout you’d enjoy? Are you a fan of dance-inspired fitness classes?

a very work & play kind of day.

Hey guys!

It’s definitely time for a little day in the life action, yes? I realized I haven’t done a DITL post since I started my new gig as a full time Social Media Director, so this will give you a bit of a glimpse into my new routine. Every day can be totally different from the next, but yesterday was pretty standard for a Friday-in-the-life for me.

7am: Wake up. Coffee. God time.
7:45 - 9am: Do my daily social posts + catch up on emails and Podio tasks.
9am: Get dressed, eat a banana, head to SoulCycle.

9:30 - 10:15am: One of the best SoulCycle classes I’ve had in a while. (Read about it here.)
10:45 - 12:45am: Went Hu Kitchen for a late breakfast. Caught up on more work.

12:45 - 2pm: Headed up to Midtown to pick up samples from two of our clients for a photo shoot next week.

2pm: Went home. Finished up more work (scheduling posts). Wrote blog post. Drank a green protein smoothie.
3pm: Wrapped up with work for the day. Got ready for a late afternoon rooftop party at Le Bain.

4:30pm - 6:30pm: Hung out there with Sydney and Martina. It was such a beautiful afternoon/evening!

6:30pm - 9pm: Went home, made myself breakfast for dinner (avocado toast + eggs). Washed it down with half a pint of this deliciousness 😛 Seriously - this stuff is UH-mazing.

9pm: Watched a little bit of TV. Got ready (again). Drank some coffee.
10:30pm: Headed down to Le Poisson Rouge for their weekly 90’s party + my friend Jenn’s birthday celebration.

If you’re ever in New York on a Friday (and a child of the late 80s/90s ;)) you’ve GOT to go to this party. It is ridiculously fun. Zero pretentiousness, fun people, and sooo much nostalgia. The cover band (The Bayside Tigers) is incredible!

2am: Way past my bedtime 😉 Headed home to end what was quite the perfect (work & play) Friday.

And now here I am on Saturday morning, coffee in hand, excited for the long weekend!
