I’m not really sure how it happened, but over the past 6 months or so I’ve gotten slightly obsessed with having fresh flowers in the apartment. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already noticed this…

I never used to be a “flowers girl.” They didn’t really do it for me. I thought, what’s the point of spending money on something that’s going to be dead in a few days anyway?
Such an optimist, I know.
After getting flowers here and there over the past year, though, I realized what a huge difference they made in the overall vibe of my shoebox-sized tiny NYC apartment. Even if only for a week or few days, I love how flowers bring a little bit of nature into my 5th floor walk-up. Life. Color. Happiness. They’re a little touch of joy that when I walk out of my room in the morning make me smile and feel a bit of extra excitement for the day ahead.
The point I’m trying to make isn’t about why you should have flowers in our house/apartment. It’s about making a point to intentionally place Happy Triggers throughout your day.
I know, Happy Triggers is the cheesiest term ever. But it works ![]()
I always knew the importance of the little/simple things in life, but lately - as I find myself rushing through the day from one thing to the next - I’m realizing how important it is to strategically place those things in my life, right where I can see them.
fresh flowers
frothing the milk for my morning coffee
lighting scented candles before I go to bed
etc.
We all have those little, seemingly insignificant things that actually make a bigger difference than we might realize…
What are yours?

girlfriend we’ve totally been on the same page recently! I just posted yesterday about how my goal is to be more observant and appreciative of those subtle beauties in life. p.s. tulips are my FAV!
100% with you on the flowers thing. I never bought myself flowers until this past February when Trader Joe’s had tulips, and I had had a really stressful week, so I thought I deserved some flowers. Oh man. GAME. CHANGER. Now I have a hard time NOT buying flowers when I go to Trader Joe’s! I bought lilies a few weeks ago after another really stressful week, and they made my room smell so wonderful that I couldn’t help but smile. Fresh flowers forever.
flowers are a must - i buy a bunch every week or two and it makes my home happy. right now, i crave the day it will be warm enough to open a window; fresh air in my apt is such a game changer. and of course, celebrating the little things; my friends and I are big believers in cake on half birthdays.
I love buying fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s (best price!) and lighting my Tocca candles in the early morning or at night before bed. These two rituals really brighten my day!
Last night, I watched a Life Hacks TEDTalk that was recently added to Netflix. The first episode in the collection was about work:life balance. And he told a story about how he unexpectedly had to take an afternoon off to pick-up his son. They ended up going to some parks, getting pizza, and just spending time together. Time he didn’t think anything of. But as he put him to bed, he said it was the “best day ever in his whole life”. He realized that life is about the small things. And that is what I’ve been trying to make important in my own life. My happy triggers as of late are slow mornings, sleepy tea at night, journal and reading at lunch instead of being on my phone. =)
I agree 100% on this idea! I like to put flowers throughout my house. I also really love when my place is clean and I want to be happy, so I keep it clean. Other things to add to the list- fun cups and dishes to use at my desk to keep me happy at work, pictures of my loved ones to look at throughout the day and music/podcasts!!! Also, candles for before bed.
Ohh yes I absolutely love having fresh flowers around! I used to really get in the habit when I shopped at Trader Joes because they were so cheap but I kind of stopped doing it when I stopped shopping there… I need to bring it back! I also need to a serious room clean but I love a clean room with candle burning that looks inviting and cozy!
I LOVE this concept so much! I love flowers but never buy them. I did dry my roses from Valentines day though and have them still out so that counts right? lol Totally checkin out the flowers at the market this weekend!
