three: do what you love.

3. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do?

My answer to this question boils down to three things:

…because of money.
…because of others’ expectations of us.
…because of our own expectations of ourselves.

There’s not much of a way around the first one. Although I strongly believe it’s possible to make a decent living by doing what you love (I mean, that’s what I’m working towards right now), there are so many circumstances that can come in the way of that – circumstances that are different for everyone. It would be ignorant to deny that fact.

As for the second two, my answer is pretty simple.

Easier said than done? Maybe. But it’s worth the risk, if you ask me.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what you love. Because when you do what you love, the world will need it.”

I ask myself this every day! I would rather be doing what I love, but because of the need for money and the expectations from family and society, I can’t just pick up my life and move thousands of miles away. It’s my dream to live abroad during my twenties and explore the world while making a living doing god knows what whether it be bartending or being a nanny. I would love to just travel even if it means I don’t have a dollar to my name. Unfortunately I have an amazing job, and to give it up would be insane. But life’s too short to NOT do what you love, so maybe soon I’ll have the courage to follow my heart :)

Such a simple mantra, but one of the hardest to actually live by. I’d say, if you can’t do what you love for a living (I think most can’t or don’t) at least find something that is your passion to do on the side. Start a blog. Play a musical instrument on the side. Just find what you love!

I agree. But unfortunately I’ve been absolutely tron up about what to do with my life after I graduate and everyone seems to have an opinion and I feel like I’m being pulled in a million directions! I think I’m just going to try and go with the flow…sounds flaky but I’m not handling this stress well!

I struggled with this for months - Working 50 hours a week at a job I didn’t love. But YOU, Gracie, are the reason I decided to ditch the idea of doing what everyone else thinks I should be and do what I KNOW I should be doing. Thank you for all of your love and support!! I thank God everyday for blessing me with a friend like you <3
