Yesterday I introduced Freely Be’s Kick The Habit campaign, which will officially begin on August 1st and run through the end of the month.
For Kick The Habit, we want to challenge you to work on breaking free from whatever bad habit you might have…no matter how big or small it may be.
But if we’re going to be hosting this challenge, we should probably take part in it ourselves, don’t you think?
The habits I decided I want to put an end to are ones that I just recently adopted - much to blame to living in New York, actually. So here’s what I’ll be working on during the month of August (and even after that, Lord willing!) for Kick the Habit.
1) stop dining out so much.
Since moving to Manhattan, I’ve eaten just about every meal out, every single day. If we’re being honest here, I actually love it! It’s just easier and often more fun than cooking/eating at home. What I don’t love is the $20 (usually +) I’ve been spending each day on food. Ridiculous, I know. So for the month of August, I’m going to pack my breakfast and lunch for at least 4 out of the 5 work days. Easy enough, right….?

2) put an end to my “sidewalk rage.”
I like to think that I’m a pretty nice person. But put me on a sidewalk with hundreds of tourists who decide to stop in the middle of the walkway and take photos and make phone calls and walk on the wrong side and…..let’s just say I don’t like the person I become.
The thing is, though, it’s not them - it’s me! Sure, it’s annoying when people don’t seem to understand that there are people who actually need to get somewhere, but is that reason to get all sorts of rude and quite literally angry? Of course not. So it’s time for me to tame my temper, get used to it, and be a good example of God’s love and humility even on the sidewalks of New York.
So…yeah. Pretty embarrassed about that last one
Which is all the more reason why I’m excited to kick that and #1 to the curb (pun sort of intended). I’ll be sure to keep you posted on my progress and/or lack thereof.
Your turn - what habit would you like to kick?

i need to kick my eating too many bananas habitt!!!!!!
no such thing as too many nannas! if you love if, and feel good.. dont worry <3
hah, I totally have sidewalk rage now too. Good luck with your goals!
I want to kick the habit of spending a ridiculous amount of time on the computer!
Yay!! Good luck- you’ll do great! Packing lunch can get exciting, at least it’ll give you a chance to try some new creations! I have sidewalk rage in VA beach too.. I can’t get anywhere without weaving through mobs of smelly and sweaty tourists and it makes me NUTS. Thank goodness mine leave in the Fall!
This whole kicking the habit idea, is brilliant! love it!
Hmmmmm i would kick the habit of spending way too much time on my computer at night, and spend more time with my husband ; )
I need to kick my habit of taking an afternoon nap! Pregnant or not, it’s a time suck!
I’m kicking the eating out habit too. I’ve gotten too attached to the coffee shops, smoothie cafes and local resturants. So far so good and it certainly means a fatter wallet!
I love this! I’m trying to kick the “constant need for contral” habit. I want August to be filled with freedom, fun, and food (obv). let’s doooo it!
im going to kick the habit of having a second helping of dinner. despite the fact that it’s a tiny portion, I don’t need it.
I just moved to NYC a few months ago and I’ve suffered from sidewalk rage as well!
I think I’m going to kick one of my own bad habits over at my own blog and feature Freely Be!
I’d like to kick the habit of sticking to my normal routine- I want to be spontaneous and go with the flow! I think I will find myself less stressed.
I’d really like to kick my road rage…East Colonial is one of the most infuriating roads in Orlando and every time I get on it my blood pressure jumps and I start cursing like a madwoman…not pretty at all!
Oh my goodness…nearly $600 on food — man at 23, I was living off of $75 a month. I’d love to go out that much
I hear ya on the sidewalk — I get that way too. In general, my patience is not great and I’d love to work on it more!
Oh my gosh, I get sidewalk rage BADLY! I hear ya, I don’t even live in NYC but when I do get into the city it starts the minute I get off the train in Grand Central. People can be so oblivious!
like you, i eat out wayyy too frequently and it’s a huge expense! that’s money better spent at trader joe’s and such. i’m also going to attempt to kick that habit, by eating “in” consistently monday through friday, at least! i don’t know if i’m ready to give up my saturday and sunday morning brunches just yet (or ever)!
Seriously laughing out loud at the NYC sidewalk thing… that’s how I get entering a crowded subway train… it all happens so fast!
I’m going to try to kick the habit of snacking! I don’t do it too much, but I think it certainly makes it easier to make unhealthy choices - I’m going to try to stick to three delicious healthy meals a day!
i dont really want to KICK a habbit.. but obtain more healthy living habits… like a better sleep schedule, better eating routine (eat more and more frequently)
I need to kick my habit of looking at things on my laptop when I’m trying to watch tv! I know that sounds silly, but I’m constantly rewinding during my favorite shows!! I don’t watch that much anyway, so constantly rewinding is such a time waster. I should also kick my habit of getting annoyed at people when they chose to walk slowly in front of my car -instead of stopping or going behind it- when I am trying to turn left out of my apartment lot, onto this super busy street might I add, and it’s clear to go- it reminds me of your sidewalk rage!
Okay, if I am going to be completely honest the habit I should kick is the internet. I spend way too much time on the computer. I do a variety of things (tumblr, tv, movies, reading…) And they are all semi-redeemable.
But that is no excuse.
Well I was planning on deleting my tumblr anyway, so maybe I’ll do that? Just a month early?
I just enjoy it so much. Blast, why couldn’t giving up a habit be easy??
Great idea! I’d like to kick the habit of yelling at bad drivers. They can’t hear me… I’m in my car, they are in theirs. Why am I yelling?!
LOL, I used to do that too!!
I too need to kick your eating out too often habit and will be adhering to your goals as well there.
I’m going to stop eating out of boredom…..and maybe give up Diet Coke. Maybe. I love this idea, Gracie!!
I want to watch less TV so that I can read — or be more active!
I need to kick my buying starbucks habit! I cannot seem to break it
I guess there’s no time like now!
Good luck! The habit I’m trying to kick is procrastination! Once I get on the computer, I can drift for hours. Organizing notebooks/rooms/life, I’ll do it all to avoid work. Definite goal this month!
I am definitely kicking spending so much money at the grocery store! I always find stuff I want to try so I sometimes end up spending $60 just on myself on random things I don’t need. It’s a lot of money for me as I don’t have a job right now. Good luck on yours!
Thats so funny about the sidewalks. My husband and I holidayed in NY on our honneymoon and we were always spoken to really nastily for walking on the wrong side. But the thing is we are Australian and we drive and walk on the left hand side of the road / path so to us we were on the correct side. It took us a few days to figure that out though
My one habit I want to break is putting myself down. Its my worst habit!
I love this idea. I’m going to kick the habit of procrastinating!
bahaha! I have such sidewalk rage! Don’t even get me started with subway or umbrella rage… But really… do you HAVE to hit me with your umbrella to get by?
Inspiring! I need to make a list for myself!
I need to kick the habit of putting EVERYTHING off until the last minute. I don’t know if it can be done… I’m a slacker
I’m totally going to join you on kicking the ‘eating out’ habit! I am so bad for that - and totally cannot afford it!
Ah! I live in Washington, DC, so I can definitely relate to sidewalk rage! I’m quick to roll my eyes and huff as I’m passing by.
i really would love to be more patient with people! I mean I have a ton of patience (I think) but I have to realize that we all work differently and just to LISTEn and be patient!
Where to start…I need to stop eating so many cupcakes and french fries for sure:) And I also need to stop being so negative about myself all the time, I’ve got to embrace positivity and find some self confidence!
Love this idea— I need to kick the habit of drinking soda! I also want to kick the habit of thinking negatively like so many others are saying above!
I love this idea, I definitely have some habits I need to kick!
First off, stop biting my nails!!! I know it’s a bit gross and franklu quite ugly but it’s so hard!
Secondly I need to get back into the habit of doing structured workouts everyday, I’ve been so lazy lately. Luckily I’m looking forward to this one
I want to stop drinking alcohol except on special occasions! And also my negative coping mechanisms…won’t go into that
