takeaways.

“You learn something new every day.”

Does anyone else find this cliché quote to be so incredibly true?

Sure, we might not have life-changing “a-ha” moments every single day, but I for one can look back on each day and realize that there’s at least one lesson that I can take away and maybe even draw from in the future.

So here are some of my takeaways from the past week or two – most mundane and even silly, but some that are actually strangely significant.

1. Sometimes – no, most of the time – sleep is the answer to life’s problems.

2. Supermodels might be fun to look at, but they’re pretty darn boring on the dance floor.

3. If you’re going to live/work/step outside in NYC during the summer, invest in as many lightweight dresses as possible.

4. …but when your subway train arrives, HOLD. THE DRESS. DOWN. Trust me.

5. I love texting as much as the next girl, but the next time a guy actually calls me, I might just have to take HIM on a date.

6. I seem to have become a walking contradiction in the sense that I thrive on spontaneity but love making plans (HELLO Google Calendar…where have you been all my life?).

7. If drinking massive amounts of Powerade Zero in one sitting is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

8. You can be friendly without having to be friends.

9. But you can also feel closer to people you’ve known for a few months than to people you’ve known for years.

10. And then – probably the best thing I’ve learned lately - BFF Erica will be joining me in NYC very very soon.

…I’m sensing this blog looking a lot more like girls meet life in the near future :)

I was not meant to work in at a computer!! haha. I have so been there with the dress thing…never want to repeat that again!

That’s awesome that your friend is moving to New York! I’m sure you guys will have plenty of adventures together

My dad told me that saying when I was really young and I think about it everyday! One takeaway from today…don’t drink coffee on an empty stomach before a tough workout. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin and fall asleep at the same time. NOT fun!

SO many good and true lessons. Powerade Zero is awesome. As is the light Gatorade. I’m all for the light sports drinks. They’re delicious, just sayin. And as much as I’m not a huge phone fan, it’s always a SHOCKER when a guy actually DIALS rather than texts. Grow some balls and pick up the phoooone!

Awesome news about your friend too, hello new adventures!

I adore this post! It’s so cute and yet insightful! What I learned today: I should not run because I feel I need to, but just because I want to.

    • says

Amen sista! I’m not a runner and perfectly okay with it :) Runners are awesome and I respect them *majorly,* but I’m just not one of ’em!

This is such a good post!! I am an observer by heart, so I totally learn something new, even if it is just watching people do what they do. Today I learned that I love working with the interns at my job by showing them the ropes. I love your #5,7 and 8! Happy Wednesday!

Loving your clothes! (obviously, as I’ve worn that black dress you sent me 92384923 times!) But today’s lesson was “I have the power to control myself and how I respond to situations. 10% of life is what happens to me and the other 90% is how I respond to it.”

“I have the power to control myself and how I respond to situations. 10% of life is what happens to me and the other 90% is how I respond to it.” <— YES!!!!!!!!! If only more people had that realization. So, so important.

i am so glad you get to spend time w. your friend! read your email- SERIOUSLY loved it so much! sending you one back soon! love you, you rock!

I was expecting this post to be about Chinese takeout or something haha! I prefer this ;)! All are so true, especially numero deux! Sometimes eating a lot of sugar in the form of frosting is a surefire way to guarantee a good night of sleep!

  9. Jordan P says

The takeaway from today (so far) would have to be: when it’s already 80 degrees at 8am, forgetting your bra under a white shirt is a NON-option. (had to drive home after the gym, or avoid a MAJOR wardrobe faux pas)…

  10. says

Great post! I live in an incredibly windy area, and I’ve had to master walking with a bag, holding coffee, talking on my phone, and holding my dress down all at once. It took a few mishaps to work the kinks out:)

  11. says

I am LOVING number 5,6, and 8! SO TRUE. My take away from the day so far is that things REALLY do work out for the best - it just takes time!

  12. says

You are so right! I feel like I learn new things every day! Please say you #2 was inspired by a real experience… that would be amazing to see. And #4… Eash, that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. So. Embarrassing. And how exciting that your friend is moving to the city! That will be so fun!

    • says

haha very true experience! Was at one of the best clubs in the city…it was super fun, but only because me and my friends don’t care what other people think when we’re dancing our booties off 😉 haha!

  13. says

Patience is a virtue. I have several friends who are buying and building new homes (at 23 years old!!) making tons of money, getting married, buying puppies, and buying new cars. I’m not exaggerating at all - and often times I’ve found myself envying them. But then I stop and think: What else do they have to look forward to? They’re rushing life, and I think that’s unfortunate. I’m so blessed - and I know it’s only going to get better! :)

    • says

Love this comment. I’m experiencing the same thing with a lot of my friends from college and it’s hard not to feel left out, but you are right on with the “I’m blessed and it’s only going to get better!”

  14. says

1 and 5 are words to live by. I met a guy a few weeks ago at a mutual friend’s party and we chatted for a while and I gave him my number when he asked for it. He texted me the next day and just said to give him a call sometime. Umm okay?

Take away from today: Wear pants to that new Bible study you visit. Everyone might sit in a circle on the floor, and a dress can make things difficult. Oh first impressions. :)

  15. says

Takeaway from yesterday? Sinus infections have weird symptoms.

Takeaway from the last 3-4 months? #9 on your list. You really CAN feel closer to people you’ve only known for a few months than people you’ve known for years!

#5 is pretty legit as well. 😉

  16. says

Today’s takeaway: A fabulous soundtrack makes for a pleasant commute…and belting out the songs, without worry of what other drivers think of you, makes for an even better experience. :)

  17. says

    5. I love texting as much as the next girl, but the next time a guy actually calls me, I might just have to take HIM on a date.

I actually had a guy ask me out on a first date via text recently. Then the guy was surprised by my “I don’t go out with guys who ask me out via text” reply. He quickly called and try to fix the situation, but at the point the damage was done and the first impression set. It’s time to set the bar higher. Be a man, grow some balls, and pick up the phone!

    • says

Amen, sista! I mean, I’ll cut guys a break depending on the situation because society has changed *so* much since the onset of texting (I think that some guys just don’t really “get it”), but having the guts and wherewithal to know to actually CALL a girl speaks volumes about a guy’s overall personality, for sure!!
