A tall Pike in the morning and a tall in the afternoon adds up to just about $3.50.
But just one venti? $2.67.
That’s right. For the sake of saving money, I sip on that baby all. day. long.

What’s your coffee preference??

I'm the girl, Gracie Gordon. Here at GML you can follow my journey of dreaming, working, eating, loving, and blogging my way through life in NYC.

Size-wise I always get the tall iced coffee. Yes, iced coffee. Even in the winter with two pumps of sugar-free vanilla syrup.
Bliss.
Ah…I know! The wonderful addiction can really put a hamper on your wallet. When I have a gift card, I always go with a triple grande soy latte. However, the other 90 percent of the time, I go with a tall iced coffee since they’re cheaper. Also, it has to be Starbucks or another quality brand…none of this Caribou Coffee business. Not sure if you have Caribou where you live….but it’s basically Starbucks’ main competitor in Minneapolis.
What kind of coffee do you usually get? Do you have different drinks for different occasions?
No coffee for me. You should splurge on the trenta sometime. Go big or go home.
I can totally relate-need to conserve that cash lol.
I only buy coffee once a week because it’s so damn expensive. I would probably spend $15 a week if I let myself go there every day! AKA - A poor grad student can’t afford such luxuries haha
I like Americano when I go to Starbucks - it’s a little different from what I can make at home (AKA worth spending my hard earned cash on) but not loaded with sugar or calories or fat. A pump of SF flavor may slip in there once in a while for a lil’ somin’ somin’.
Alternate title: Why Starbucks has all of my money
Or at least that’s how I feel!
haha
So smart! I get a grande red eye (coffee with a shot of espresso), save my cup and when I go in later after class or work to get a coffee refill for 50 cents! Ohhh, the wonderful life of a college student…I recently became a Gold Member, though, so will now get FREE refills! I will probably get tall’s and refill it as needed and when I’m there doing homework/studying -a constant flow of caffeine is a necessity.

you actually save money at starbucks if you bring a re-usable cup! and april 22nd it’s free if you bring one
Sadly my budget doesn’t allow for too many trips to Starbucks. Oh the life of a frugal grad student. I’m more of a “bring my own travel mug everywhere” kind of girl. However, on special occasions when grad school is really kicking my butt I’ll buy a special coffee. And when that time comes I am not picky lol
Even better — bringing your own teabag and just asking for hot water at SBx! Ultimate cheapskate move, but hey — I’m in college!
haha, so guilty of this. The microwave becomes my best friend
Oh man, I saved so much money in January when I gave up Starbucks. Even a one-a-day habit can really add up to some serious cash! I don’t really drink much coffee anymore but I’ve found that I really enjoy making my own chai tea.
I get a tall or grande Americano. (My friend used to work at Starbucks and they use the same amount of espresso in an Americano that they do in a Venti, so why spring for more hot water?)
I feel like I am in such the minority—but I don’t have a coffee preference-because I don’t like coffee. I don’t really do tea all that often. I’m a strictly water girl it seems. Boring.
You are too cute! No shame, I would (and have) done the same thing!
I have def been compromising with making tea or hot choccolate or coffee or w/e at home before I go. I have 2 bottles of flavored syrups that were gifts and I can make things that taste pretty darn good!
I always used to bring my travel mug to Starbucks but I think it only saves 10 cents which is not really very much. I guess if I got coffee every day it might be worth it. In canada we have Tim Hortans everywhere too! Which is much more like fast food, drive thru style but its also much cheaper! Extra large earl grey tea is only about $2.00.
i usually opt for a cappuccino with skim milk (skim supposedly makes the best foam…) but usually, b/c i’m all about cutting costs, i make coffee at home and take a travel mug with me : )
great blog - found you via PB Fingers. so glad i stopped by!

Yay, I’m so glad you stopped by too!!

I’m the cheapest person around. Garenteed!
…. I DO however order my coffee online (it’s 3$ per pound cheaper thanin the store) from a shop in my hometown and have my mom pick it up and ship it to me (to save the 20$ shipping fee).
Why haven’t I thought of that yet? My wallet’s about to thank you
I am such a sucker for Starbucks and Caribou but Im trying reallllly hard to not go there. It takes all my money! So far I have been doing pretty well. But when I NEED
a coffee fix I always order a medium skinny vanilla lattee. Yum!
Lately I am in a venti iced coffee easy on ice with soy milk kick. Yes, I kind of like confusing the barristas, they always ask at least twice before they write the order. It might have something to do with the accent
But because I am cheap like that, in the office I carry with me instant coffee packs. This way, I just need hot water and it’s something like 50c per mug…
Although I don’t really drink coffee anymore, I’ve always been a huge fan of lattes. Now, if I’m craving one I’ll just go decaf, preferably at Starbucks.
Well, PREFERENCE is to give business to mom n’ pop coffee shops (they always have the best coffee!) but living in the greater city of Los Angeles they’re few and far between so I go with a venti iced americano with splenda and a splash of half and half. They know my order at, like, three different Starbucks… I’m not sure if I should be proud of that.
I read your post over breakfast… I just had lunch and am still thinking about it! haha, I just ventured to starbucks to treat myself to a skinny caramel latte. I figure I don’t have time for my blog tonight unless I finish writing a paper…and I can’t write a paper without some caffeine running through my veins. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do
It’s crunch time! Thanks Gracie for reminding me that my work is worth the occasional splurge at Starbucks
Starbucks totally adds up day by day. I just make coffee at home now ;D
hahaha I do the exact same thing, everyone always says “Is that the same coffee from this morning?” Plus is saves on having to make two Starbucks runs
Haha you are too funny!
I used to get Starbucks on campus at least a few times a week, but I’ve saved so much money since I’ve stopped drinking coffee after breakfast time!
I used to be all about the vanilla lattes, until I realized I couldn’t afford it! Back in those days, I definitely was a coffee snob! I’m glad that’s over with! Now I drink straight coffee with a lil half & half and a lil sugar. It’s much lighter on my waist and my wallet!
I do the exact same thing!
I used to be SUCH a starbucks person, but now that I’ve kicked the caf I only get tea there once or twice a year! Hahaha I am such a cheapoooo
The ultimate money saver at Starbucks is order a Grande in a Venti cup, 9 times out of 10 they just fill it up all the way or at least most of the way
half skim/half soy latte. It’s just perfect.
gah! I try not to hink about how much money i would save if I never bought coffee outside my house..im scared to calculate LOL…luckily i am not a HUGE fan of starbucks..but I do have an obsession with panera coffee and it is just so conveniently located on my way to work
I love your blog! I read it every day!
In terms of Starbucks, I love it. I go only *maybe* once a week and have been on a huge iced coffee w/ soy milk and 2 pumps of toffee nut syrup kick. I usually order the tall too.
Yummy!
Even if you just get plain coffee, if you register a Starbucks card and keep reloading it, you earn points per purchase that eventually lead up to free drinks! They also do the occasional free treat card - think of the scones! tehe
Omgosh yesss SCONEZ!!! Hahaha
venti all the way times TWO hahahaha thats 5 bucks
I’m more of a tea person. The only place I can order coffee out is Whole Foods because I’m allergic to soy and dairy.
I’ll take my Venti tea straight up to sip all day.
[...] The drying process might be a tad delayed, but at least I’ll be able to fund the next few days’ worth of venti Pikes. [...]
No way! You can bring your cup back to starbucks and get a refill for 50 cents! I grab my Venti Bold (which started as a tall pike months ago) at Rockefeller every morning, and then around 2:00 I head to another starbucks for my re-fill.
WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS?! Are you sure it works at every Starbucks??
Yes, as far as I know, every Starbucks! I have never been turned down - in NYC at least! It’s one of their eco friendly perks, I guess! I hope I saved you lots of $$$!! lol Also, if you get the Starbucks card, register, and get enough drinks to get a gold card, you get a free drink every 15…so I always go and get like the $6 grande skinny caramel macchiato extra shot soy milk..etc, haha!
