Do you ever think of something funny / happy / cute and smile to yourself?
Because I do.
And yes, I get plenty of odd looks because of it.
I’ve noticed that not many people smile here in New York, and I’m not just talking about in the city. Maybe it’s something in the air…? Whatever it is, I’m not falling victim to it. I’m a firm believer that smiles - if used correctly - can change your own mood and the mood of others for the better.

I don’t care if smiling at people makes me look strange. I don’t care if it implies that I’m “weak.” And maybe it’s the dead giveaway that I’m not a true New Yorker. But at the end of the day, I’d rather be viewed that way than become jaded to the beauty of interacting with others…and spreading God’s love with one simple action.
So no – I’m not going to stare at the floor with a stern face on the subway. And I’m not going to just ignore the barista who so kindly poured my morning coffee.
I am, though, going to be getting a great workout.

I completely agree with you! I always remember the people who smile at me, (ESPECIALLY if it’s somewhere smelly/crowded/not fun) and how good it made me feel and try to do the same thing. Thanks for the reminder
Enjoy your workout!
Amen sista! Smiling is the best way to go through one’s day.
Yes! Kids especially ALWAYS make me smile to myself as well as when little events/experiences/thoughts randomly pop into my head
I TOTALLY agree! Why go around grumping at total strangers? The only reason my husband approached me the night we met was because I smiled at him (because I was smiling at everyone)!!!
Love this! And smiling not only makes other people but it instantly makes yourself happy too! (At least it does for me!)
You are such a shining light of Gods love and kindness! I adore this post and your outlook on life!!
This is a great post! I always smile to myself and you’re right - people do give the stink eye when they see someone smiling. People are so paranoid and they think the joke’s on them. I just want to say - Sorry, buddy. The world doesn’t revolve around you.
I find myself smiling (or laughing) to myself sometimes. I live in the Midwest, but I’ve noticed that people in the South seem much more friendlier…I think it’s more than just a stereotype..it’s just a different way of living there!
Love this! Rock on girl! The more people think I’m a weirdo for smiling, the more I do it! I think a smile can change the feeling, direction and emotion of someone’s day. It’s the little things that can make the biggest differences!
I’m with you! Smiling more never hurt anyone!
Amen. I’ve never understood when I smile at a stranger and they don’t reciprocate. What’s that about? I didn’t try to rob you… I SMILED.
Rock that smile, girl!
I used to feel odd because I smile at everyone, too, but now I do it proudly and hope that it makes someone’s day brighter
I always smile for no reason! “Smiling’s my favorite!”
Love this!! People in Boston don’t smile either! I remember the first time I was in Virginia and went for a run. Everyone said good morning or hello and I loved it, but was totally surprised. Why are us northerners such grumps??
SMILING’S MY FAVORITE. I always walk around the city with my face all scrunched up from the cold. Total beeyotch. I need to make a mental note to smile more!
I am always smiling..and it’s sad sometimes because people ask me why am I always smiling…and I tell them why not smile?
This was a very “Buddy the Elf” post — I love!
I, too, smile a lot and don’t mind if others think that’s odd. However, I live in the south and it’s a lot more normal/expected around here for people to make eye contact and smile. Glad you are spreading the love and cheer! I’m sure more people appreciate it than you think. xoxo
I totally agree!!! That is why I love Texas is because the people here are so friendly compared to the DC area where I am from. However, I still come across the person who vows not to smile when smiled at….I just shrug and move on!
I’m such a smiley person too! Getting smiles from others always puts me in a good mood, so I like to do the same for others.
That picture of the “Take a smile” note is so cute! I would love to find that posted somewhere!
That makes me think of on Elf when he says “Smiling’s my favorite!”
I couldn’t survive if I didn’t smile! I smile without even knowing I’m doing it
Oh and I’ve tagged you as a Stylish Blogger
Check out my last post for the details!
I agree with you- you never know who needs a smile!
“Try not to frown because you never know who is falling in love with your smile”
i always smile at people & it upsets me when people don’t smile back.
so true! love it. It’s proven that if you smile even if your in a bad mood…it will make you happier!
Living in Chicago, I feel ya about the smiling! Is it a bigger city thing? When I do smile, people look at me like I’m about to mug them.
Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, and a beautiful thing. ~ Mother Teresa
Aw so cute! Gotta love smiling
I often listen to podcasts like Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me when walking around or running, and I’m sure people think I’m slightly nuts when I break into a giggle mid-run. Admittedly I’m a bit of a scowler most of the time though.
word up! i love that photo, btw! i totally entertain myself with my own thoughts and smile/laugh/crack up constantly! xo
I think I’m a pretty amiable person, but I’ve just found out recently that I appear very cold and snobby, so I’ve made it a point to smile at least five strangers a day. I know how good it feels to have someone smile at me on a bad day, and I’d like to think that I can improve someone’s mood just by smiling =]
spread the love my dear <3 maybe one day they will catch on? and yes i smile to myself often and sometimes people even ask what i'm smiling about….
