So I’ve decided that writing about guys is like, really fun. But considering my previous posts on the topic were quite pessimistic, I think it’s time to point out some of the things I love tend to appreciate when it comes to the opposite sex.
1. A man’s man. I’m not saying you have to be a lumberjack for a living, but please know how to change a tire, mow the lawn, and opt for drinks that don’t have a little umbrella in them.
2. Good hair. And when I say “good hair,” I basically mean anything other than bad hair (i.e. spikes, bowl cuts, and Ashton Kutcher circa 2000). I’m partial to hair that is sort of styled but sort of…not. For example:
3. A set of beliefs/values. I have more respect for guys who know where they stand – especially because it generally means that they have an understanding about what’s actually going on in the world.
4. Cooking skills. If you can cook well, you’ve already won 75% of my heart. No surprise there.
5. Quick-wittedness. A general sense of humor is one thing, but a sharp and perceptive sense of humor scores extra brownie points with me.
I have a feeling that there is going to be a part 2 (and 3, 4, 5) of this post…
Which of these 5 do you agree/disagree with?
(p.s. the fact that the only photo in this post is of David Beckham was entirely intentional.)

A MAN’S MAN! My father is a man’s man and I don’t know about you but I think a man’s man is hard to come by in the new generations!
Hahahhaa you just made my morning!! I miss our guy talks… you always have the best input!
PS - the kittens are hilarbbbious!! (Silas just walked across the key board) hehe
Loves you!

YES to #1 and #3 especially. Good hair is always a positive, but the other two are sooooo much more important. I also love a good work ethic and a sense of pride for oneself. And cooking? Well, I’d love it, but I think that would negate the saying “A way to a man’s heart is though his stomach,” and I’m kind of banking on that one to land me my future hubs
Love these 5 things and agree so much with 1 and 3! Dont ya wish there was a man that had all 5, I mean maybe there is, but where? lol!!
I agree with every single one of these. NOW where is he!?!
I agree with two and five, but I disagree with number one - too stereotypical/traditional. I can change a tire and cut the grass just fine on my own, I don’t need or want a guy to do these things for me (I actually really like cutting the grass). Heck, I don’t need a guy to do anything for me, which is why I believe in everything being 50-50 in a relationship: both individuals should know how to cook, clean, take care of the kids, do chores, etc. So in my books, “I will like you” if you agree with this philosophy!! hahaha
Yeah, I hear ya! It’s not that I don’t want to do those things *ever*, I just want a guy who knows how to do them as well
I love the last one - a little snark and a lot of banter is essential to me!
We’re 5 for 5 together. I swear, every 23 year old guy I’ve met in the past 6 months has been balding. It’s an epidemic, I swear! hahaha…kidding. Well, kind of….
Like a couple others, I definitely agree with 1 and 3!
I like #3 for the same reasons you do. I like guys who care about something important in this world.
DEFINITELY has to have cooking skills. Not so much they outshine me, but know how to work an oven and stuff. Also, they have to know how to do laundry, iron, vacuum..all that stuff. So we can share the household chores
i love this list! i just did a big post on all the craziness that has happened to me in the year that i have been single, and now i feel like i should do a follow up post, similar to yours! i totally agree w/ your list! 1 and 4 are my faves
These are my top 5 for sure!! That is so funny! Especially a “man’s man.” I am a very southern girl, so I want a good southern man, who likes to hunt with my dad, be outside, and fix things.
I was just telling my pastor the other day, “You know, I just want to find a guy who I can have a conversation with! Someone who talks about more than football and his mom!” She thought that was hilarious.
I agree with all of these, although there are always stipulations. I wouldn’t mind a guy who really appreciates the arts and isn’t going to throw a fit when I ask him to check out a gallery or see a show. I’d also like a man who can make quick decisions. I hate playing the, “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” game. I make decisions all day - SURPRISE ME!
“I’d also like a man who can make quick decisions. I hate playing the, “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” game. I make decisions all day – SURPRISE ME!” <— yes, yes, and YES. That's such an attractive trait to me!
TOTALLY agree with number 1… when a man can do manly stuff, it’s such a turn on!
The hair I don’t care about quite as much… I’m just against anything that requires more time for him to get ready than me. I’m completely turned off by metrosexuals.
I completely agree with all 5. Another deal breaker for me (and this doesn’t just go for guys) is not being too strong-minded. I want to share different views with someone, but I’m not in the mood to debate 24-7.
AMEN to all of these!!!!
A guy doesnt need to be more emotional than me or care about his looks more than me.. THAT is a major turn off
and totally agree with you about faith/values.. my man leads me spiritually and pushes me towards the Lord! If he didnt do that, then we would just be another worldly messed up relationship, cause naturally i am so sinful. I see it all the time in college, the boys will disrespect the girls and i HATE when girls are disrespected!
i agree with them all, except the good hair one.
my hubby has all those qualities except the good hair….he has a great excuse though.
he shaves his head bald. it works. i love it
Good cook is an ideal trait!
For me a must is being tall — like at least 6’4″ and yes I am only 5’4″
I agree with the man’s man! I don’t want a man to order a peach blossom at a restaurant like my ex- boyfriend did!
I totally agree with all of these, especially 3 and 4. If a guy can cook me up a steak dinner, I’ll be completely won over!
I voted for you!
I’m ok with my guy not knowing how to do a ton of cooking… Although he is great with scrambled eggs!
and nice SMILE!
oh and at least six foot one…the same height as me or taller please! wow i could write a novel on this subject haha
love beckham by the way!!!
I completely agree! A big thing for me is a guy who respects women.
I voted for you, good luck!
Man’s man - which is why I love Aidan and not Big on SITC - he could make furniture … with his hands!
I agree with all of these. (Though, you know, you can fail at each and be David Beckham and I’d be OK.) I think the best guy is the one that will do anything for you.
I actually like baldies. Like shaved head bald. Love it. Quick wittedness is a must, as well as open-mindedness and not being obsessed with their appearance.
hehe, I like shaved heads too!!
I totally agree with every one of those! You’re right on point with all of them
Its so difficult to find a man who encompasses every quality we’re looking for though…I guess we have to give-and-take a little bit! haha
Ok, I’ve been trying to post a comment all day, but for some reason, my comp does not like GML today. Oh well. Just wanted to say that I totally agree with your list, especially 1,3,and 5!! I’d like to add a #6: Respect my beliefs.
Example: I’m a TLW kind of girl. Dated a guy that claimed he was OK with my desire to wait till marriage, but then he said outright that he’s used to having “sleepovers” with girls he’s in a relationship with. I was like, “You know where I stand.” Long story short, that was pretty much the end of him. Dudes, respect what your girl believes.
Ooh, I should probably clarify a couple things. First, TLW = “True Love Waits”. Second, it wasn’t me that ended things with the guy, let’s just leave it at that.
I’m with you!!! I’m a TLW kind of girl too
I love them all but especially 1, 3 & 4. Also, a guy who laughs at my jokes and gets me, respects me and has similar life goals (like having a family, etc). My favorite one (stolen from glamour) is wait for a guy who sees you the way you want to be seen, someone who thinks your smart, beautiful, funny, powerful, always, even on days when you don’t believe any of that about yourself.
dudes aren’t really my fave.
I agree with all of this
I also like when they have a good sense of humour, a need to be protective (not too much, of course), and smart. I like smart guys.
I have to say I agree with 3, 4 and 5. Although he doesn’t necessarily have to be a pro at cooking, it’s nice to have a man who will work in the kitchen with you. It’s quality bonding time!!!
Lady, I SO agree with all of these points. I think that you need to have #3 in order to really have #1 though. Otherwise you’re still in danger of some major Peter Pan syndrome.
If I could find a guy who loved (cooking, and eating) food as much as I do…I’d be a happy girl! Plus, HUMOR and a genuine personality would seal the deal. We’ll each find our dream man Gracie, someday!!
I’m a little late but I absolutely LOVE this post. Becks is my #1 baby daddy (haha) AND he’s athletic and I have a feeling he doesn’t have drinks with umbrellas in them. Also his hair is so nice!
