Oh HEY sweetpeas!
It’s that time again – let’s bust some more fashion myths, shall we?
(Click here if you missed part one.)
Myth #3: Horizontal stripes are unflattering.
Truth: I’m not buying it. I’m a firm believer that any body type can wear horizontal stripes – you just have to know how to work it.
Pair a horizontal striped top with a high-waisted skirt for a chic and flattering look, a la Kim K.
A fitted blazer can also add structure to horizontal stripes.
Lastly, belts are a good way to break things up so you don’t get “lost” in a striped pattern.

Myth #4: Don’t mix patterns.
Truth: Please DO mix patterns! Matching is so…boring. Take my word for it (her’s too
).
Although it’s *not* necessary, you can play it safe by mixing patterns with similar colors - like this floral shirt + leopard cardigan (both from H&M):

That’s all for today! Keep it real, sassy ones. xoxo G
- Do you agree that these are fashion myths?
- What other fashion “rules” would you like to see broken?

I love mixing prints! I also remember my mom always saying that horizontal strips were unflattering and no one should wear them - I think it is just something she grew up with, maybe that generation?
i dig this. i love mixing prints too. and horizantal stripes can be awesome. dig your style, girl!
Loved this post! I’m working on braving the mixed-prints look more often.
Confession: I’m not fashionable at all. The idea of mixing patterns freaks me out. Dull, right? I tend to dress is solids because I feel like prints overwhelm my short stature. Love reading your ideas about fashion though! Maybe I can pick one or two ideas to try out
I am all about stripes as I posted about the other day…oh and of course mixing prints! I loved your last about mixing brown and black too…always….black jeans with brown boots done right is great.
I also like mixing unlikely stripes…like a striped scarf with a striped shirt in different size stripes or even colors.
Oh man, I still get nervous about mixing prints — I’ll have to work on that this fall!
I totally agree with the horizontal stripes. If the cut is right, they don’t widen you. Of course, allover horizontal strips are terribly unflattering.
I love part 2. i agree stripes and mixing patterns are a total DO! love it
It totally depends on the stripe and the shape of the piece. If its a flattering shape, then it will likely be flattering even in stripes.
I hate the rule that you can’t mix brown and black and navy and black - but you’ve already covered this! Those are two of my favorite combinations.
This makes me miss H&M
But seriously, I see LOTS of women mix patterns and I love the way it looks. It’s definitely something I want to try - we all need a little more Carrie Bradshawn in our wardrobes!
AND I totally spelled her last name wrong. Oy.
I agree with mixing patters..the trick is to make sure that each pattern is around the same size..thin stripes with small flowers, etc.
I just found your blog the other day and I love it! Especially all the fashion tips. I haven’t even mixed patterns together only because I’m scared I’ll mess it up. I agree that all the myths can be thrown out the window if you do them right!
I love horizontal stripes!
can i just say that you are ten billion times more gorgeous than any kim kardashion, model, or magazine print in this post! stripes look great on ya!! <3
Wow girl, you are too sweet!!
LOVE!! I totally forgot I wore that outfit you linked to, too! LOL
I agree!! Your outfit is adorable - I could use more fashion advice
I am a bit curvy and I LOVE wearing a high waisted stripped dress. It looks really flattering in me!
I love navy and black together. I also love brown and black together! If you pull the outfit together properly, it makes quite a statement for all those who think you can weat those colors together!
Yes definitely! I love horizontal stripes and I don’t think they make you look wide at all. That’s a good idea to wear it with a skirt. I wore my black and white skirt tucked into a jean skirt and I loved it
i am a HUGE fan of stripes!! When it comes to fashion I am so boring and wear mostly solid colors BUT if I were to wear pattersn I would definately blend! i love that look!
Black and brown. Some people are SO against it. I think, when worn right, it can be so chic!
Love these myths debunked! I usually dont follow any of them, just the pattern one! That one scares me a bit!
I’m so scared to mix patterns! But I do DO stripes
Almost everything in my closet is striped! I have a hard time staying away from them
Mixing prints = AWESOME! I always try to wear belts to make shirts more fitted but always think I look too hippy!
Totally agrees that these are myths! I actually used to think the whole ‘don’t wear stripes’ thing was valid! I love the look of mixed patterns, I just haven’t worn it yet.
I completely agree with both of these! I love horizonal stripes, especially in a nautical-inspired look.
I haven’t really felt brave enough to mix patterns before, but I would love to try it.
I love hearing your fashion tips!
[...] note: this is not a prime example of mixing patterns. [...]
