an ode to writing.

All throughout high school and college, I dreaded the thought of writing papers. The only part of the writing process that I actually enjoyed was when it was finished. Even if I was writing about something that was particularly interesting to me, the fact that it was mandatory and going to be graded sucked the life out of any possible enjoyment or fulfillment that there may have been. The thing is, though - based on my grades - writing is something that I’m not half bad at. Regardless, all I could think about when I graduated from college in December was “I’m never writing again.” And now - here I am - writing every single day and loving it.

Even though I’ve been blogging for a couple of months, I just recently made the realization that I do love writing! In fact, it is easily one of my favorite things to do. Being able to choose what *I* want to write about and knowing that people are actually reading is worlds apart from the reflection papers and thesis’ I wrote during school. Not only do I get to write about what I’m passionate about, but writing itself has become a passion of mine. And, after years of thinking that there wasn’t anything that I was truly good at and passionate about - this was quite an exciting realization for me! Here are a few of the reasons why I truly love writing.

1. It challenges me. Writing isn’t always easy. It forces me to really think through particular topics and find the best way to convey my thoughts. And, now that I’m finished with college, I need that challenge in my life. I feel like writing keeps me on my toes, you know?

2. The thrill that comes when a good topic to write about pops into my head. Normally, this happens at completely random moments in the day. I’ve found that I rarely have to brainstorm topics anymore because they’ll eventually show up on their own.

3. There’s nothing like being in the zone and having the words just flow off my fingers. I’m sure you other writers out there know what I’m talking about! Sometimes writing seems forced, but other times it comes like second nature. I’ve learned to really take advantage of those in the zone times; it’s when I can produce the best material that I have to offer.

4. I feel like I’m continually learning - not just about things I research, but about myself. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve written a blog post or journal entry where the words on the paper reveal something about me that I hadn’t already known.

5. I can reach and connect with people that I otherwise wouldn’t have, and potentially help them. If my readers can walk away with at least one piece of advice or sense of positivity…well, I can’t think of anything more fulfilling.

6. I get the opportunity to share my voice. We live in a world where there are so many different beliefs, values, ideologies, interests, etc., and sometimes it’s easy to feel caught in the middle. Writing has allowed me to find *my* voice in the midst of everyone else’s. Even if my voice doesn’t make much of an impact, the fact alone that I have the freedom to share it is priceless.

  • Do you consider yourself a writer?
  • What do you love the most about writing?

  • I love writing, but most of all I love writing fiction. I am a daydream and it just takes me away to another place. I actually loved writing papers in school and found it easy. But..I hated math. ;)

  • I love adding coconut oil to my green monsters- and last night I made polenta for the first time. It was garlic and basil flavored and quite delicious.

Writing is so therapeutic for me. I can totally relate to “the thrill”- I’ll be doing the most random things when I think of stuff I want to say.

  • i love polenta too!!

i love writing… i have always had an obsession with words (i get a merriam-webster “word of the day” in my email inbox every morning) because i think words are so beautiful and it feels soo good to be able to put into words exactly what you are feeling/thinking…

  • I have been wanting to make super charge me cookies for awhile, I need to get out that book from the depths of my cabinet. I don’t really consider myself a writer, I never really have. I consider myself someone who loves to write about food, does that make me a writer? Congrats on your cholesterol going down! yay for u! Your hair looks beautiful btw, getting mine done tomorrow!

  • I’m considering myself a writer more and more these days. I just LOVE it and want to do it as much as possible.

Love the new hair. You’re so stinking gorgeous babe! And sooo great that your lab results showed improved. Shows the doctors you know what you’re doing. :D

  • Your hair and your dinner look great!

I found that when I started blogging I loved writing too. I’m no pro, but I find that it is a great way for me to express myself and share. Who doesn’t love to share?!

  • I love writing too!! Blogging doesn’t even seem like “writing” to me most days but it really is! And I think what makes it fun is that I choose to do it and I get to write about whatever I want, like you said! And isn’t it funny how topics come to you in the most random times.. ?
Congrats on the lower cholesterol!!! That is awesome girl!!!!
Your hair looks so good! Mine needs some touching up real bad too…
    Love you!

  • YOUR HAIR LOOKS AWESOME! hot mamma to the max! i love getting my hair done!!!
and your dinner looks GREAT TOO!!!
girlfrand i adore the health foods store-obsession or not! love you!

  • So that is why your hair always looks stunning!!!!

One of the reasons I started blogging was for an outlet to write. I used to love writing in high school, yet my major, architecture, definitely doesn’t call for it.

  • Dude, I love to write. It is so cathartic, and it is how I feel I can best express myself. For the last two years I have been out of school so all the writing I have been doing has been just for me. But I am going back to school next year, and I hope that I am able to channel my love for writing into the actual act when I may or may not be so passionate about the content anymore!

  • You are smokin’ hot, lady bug!

I am a writer and hope to be a published author one day. For me, writing is my greatest form of expression and brings pleasure to my day each and every day. Funny thing is, I’m not much of a journal writer, I would much rather right in a forum (like my blog and hopefully books) than writer privately in a journal or something. Something about the release of knowing others will read it is what does it for me.

  • Your hair looks GORGEOUS girl, I love it!! I’m definitely a blonde chica as well :) I love to write, but writing paper after paper in college has kind of killed it for me. I still like to write about things I care about, but I absolutely dread school writing. You’re an awesome writer though- I can’t believe you haven’t been doing it since you were young!! You definitely have a talent for it!! Hope you have a great Friday love, happy weekend!

  • Your hair looks awesome. Mine is way overdue for a touch-up.

Yes I’m a writer, but not only because it’s my job. I feel like I was a writer as a kid, and in high school and through college. (Not that I enjoyed writing formal term papers in college. Boring. I much preferred the writing I did in my journalism classes.) Though I like the research and background aspect of writing, I really just like playing with words and sentence structure and so on.

  • I love your hair!! You have great aim with the camera - whenever I take a picture of myself I always miss my face or go up one nostril or something ;) Congrats on the lowered cholesterol, too!

I enjoy writing MUCH more now that I don’t have to do it for school or follow deadlines. When I write for fun, I feel as though my writing is better because I’m not following particular rules, except what I think is interesting and that will appeal to both me and other people. Like you said, writing is a passion. :)

  • Your polenta and shrimp dish looks amazing! Oh and those coookies…I keep seeing them and kind of need them in my life! I feel the same way about writing-I hated it in school but now that I am free to write whatever I want, it is much more enjoyable!

  • All the food on this post looks amazing. I don’t consider myself a writer, but I still love to do it anyway-its a great outlet!

  • I need to start using polenta more. I dont really consider myself a writer, but eventually maybe I will!

  • Congrats on the cholesterol girlie! That is awesome. And your hair looks amazing - I am so jealous!! I do consider myself a writer - I love writing in any form (Blogging, fiction, articles, etc). I majored in Creative Writing for a short period of time before switching to English, and sometimes I wish I hadn’t switched as I miss the amount I used to write!

  • I’m not sure I would consider myself a writer but I do love it. In school it was my favorite thing to do even though I usually DIDN’T enjoy the things I had to write about.

That’s great news about the cholesterol! I’m so glad it’s beginning to go down and I hope that with your next test, it’s even better. :)

  • Your hair looks awesome, Gracie!
I´m so happy about your amazing cholesterol news :D
Wish you a lovely weekend, girlie!
    Brazilian XOXO´s,
    Gabriela

  • I definitely consider myself a writer - English was always my favorite subject in school (and I majored in it in undergrad), and writing has always been one of my strengths. I enjoy writing because I love playing with words, phrases, sentence structure, etc. I enjoy the challenge of finding just the right way of expressing my ideas so that they are accessible for others.
