Baking first thing in the morning is one of the best habits I’ve formed over the years. But with the holiday season in full swing and indulgences around every corner, starting the day off with cookies for breakfast isn’t always the best idea.
Who am I kidding? Of course it’s the best idea.
To lighten the blow just a bit, I made a healthier cookie – both in contents and size.
Those are Julie’s Giant Oatmeal Cookies, which I’ve made once before. This time I halved the recipe, and made the following substitutions:
- spelt flour instead of all-purpose
- canned pumpkin instead of applesauce
- added an extra 1/4 cup of oats
But the cookie bonanza didn’t stop there. I also whipped together a batch of classic chocolate chip cookies. Er…make that Classic Christmas-colored M&M Cookies. You know, since I’m trying to get into the Christmas spirit and all.
I used Hershey’s Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, but once again halved it. And clearly I subbed out the chocolate chips for M&Ms.
Though both delicious, I’d be lying if I said that the “naughty” cookies did not reign supreme in the taste-department. BUT! The “nice” cookies are still quite tasty as well, and they even make for a great healthy snack. There are no losers here!
Which of these cookies would you reach for first?

I’d totally go for the naughty first. I can’t help myself with anything Christmas colored that also has chocolate involved. Surriously. mmmmm
Hope you have a fabby week, my love! xoxo
The M&M one. When I want a cookie I usually choose the more decadent one.
I love baking first thing in the morning - on Saturday I had made 3 batches of cookies & a soup by 10:30 AM.
I love baking in the afternoon; it avoids the “mid afternoon blues”. I’d reach for the oatmeal first.
M&M cookies always remind me of my ex’s older sister for some reason…she only baked them once, but for some reason they’re just interrelated in my mind. I’d probably go for those first
Yum! Looks delish! I’d eat those for breakfast!
Cookies make the best breakfast! Enjoy.
I’d reach for the healthy cookie first. (And the M&M cookie right after.)
Probably the M&M’s
They both look amazing though!
I’d have the oatmeal cookies first, since they are more filling. If I just had the M&M cookies, I’d probably gobble them up so fast there would be none left! Unless I had a glass of milk with them - then it would be easier to just have 1 or 2!
I think for me it would have to be both first! They look too delicious to choose between!
NAUGHTY! Or half and half?
I would eat oatmeal cookies over M&M cookies anyday, but that’s just me!
Both look amazing, Gracie. Do you deliver?
DEFINITELY both! come on.. who needs modesty?
M&M of course!
I’d grab a healthy cookie first and follow that with an M&M cookie for dessert!
The naughty one! I love holiday things
I’m allergic to M&M’s so I’d go for the oatmeal ones. But that’s ok because I loooooove oatmeal cookies!
I love oatmeal cookies in the morning, but I’d definitely want an M&M one later in the day or for dessert:)
Hehe naughty and nice cookies
I have to say I’d reach for both
I’m more of an evening baker than a morning one, but I can imagine how nice it would be to have those smells floating through the house first thing in the morning.
They looks delicious!
They both look so good!
ill take em both, thank you!
Hey Gracie, I was feeling the same..so I planned a night of baking, chrisitmas music and wine……. with some fun girlfriends and it helped get in the spirit..plus it just snowed so that helped bring that feeling:)hope you feel better!
Well I’m feeling a little fiesty with my Pinot in hand, so let’s go with naughty =)
I would reach for the oatmeal cookies because I LOVE anything with oats in it! However those naughty cookies look pretty delicious as well!
the cookies both look amazing
