Like most people, the holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. No matter how old I get, I will always love the joy and magic that Christmas seems to bring.
So…how is it December 5th, yet I’m totally lacking the Christmas spirit?!
I’m pretty sure it’s a combination of a) having a lot on my plate at the moment and b) being at a weird age where I’m no longer a child but don’t yet have children/a family of my own. I’m sure many of you can relate.
So…what’s a girl to do? In the past I’ve forced myself to engage in some of my favorite childhood Christmas pass times…
…but that doesn’t entirely do the trick anymore.
I’ve come to the conclusion that true holiday cheer cannot and should not be forced. So instead of spending another moment feeling guilty for my lack of Christmas spirit, and instead of inundating myself with holiday music and movies, I’m just going focus on being joyful and thankful for the life that I’ve been blessed with.
Don’t get me wrong – I love decorations and gifts and all things Christmas – but I also don’t want to forget the true meaning. Christ’s birth changed the course of our humanity, and that is something worth celebrating!
Cookies don’t hurt either.
Are you in the holiday spirit yet? What helps you get there?

Being with my family this weekend definitely helped get me into the holiday spirit. I can’t wait to be home though, where it’s easier to be in the Christmas spirit when I’m not dragged down by the distractions of school and the city!!
I love the holidays, am fully decorated, and still am not 100% in the holiday spirit. It is really weird since I am happier than ever since quitting my job. I don’t know what’s going on! I’m glad I’m not the only one though. And I can’t wait til we have kids and can experience Christmas again through the eyes of a child.
I never really feel like its Christmas when I’m at school because for me Christmas is all about spending time with my family and a house full of decorations. Both of which are missing at school. That still doesn’t stop me from baking holiday treats or rocking out to Christmas songs any chance I get
Im with you! im not in the holiday spirit at ALL! i love your count down calendar though!
Starbucks red cups! Snow helps too-we had our first real snowfall yesterday. It was magical!
I’m so glad you posted this, I graduated last year and am living on my own, but it’s hard for me to get in the spirit for some reason, I put up my dream, but just not feelin’ it this year… maybe i’ll make some cookies today and see if that helps
Pandora Christmas music!
And watch “Love Actually” one of my all time favorite movies.
I LOVE Love Actually!!
No I’m totally not! And I blame it on the fact that the hubby and I are both working 60+ hour weeks and we live in Cali 3000 miles from our families =(
I find it so hard to get into the holiday spirit when I’m stressed out trying to write papers and study for exams. I don’t really get into a Christmasy mood until after I’m all done with my exams.
I’m not in the Christmas spirit, either- it’s really hard for me to get excited when I’m at school with finals hanging over my head. Going home always helps- but this year I won’t be home until the 23rd!
Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’m not sure why I’m not in the Christmas spirit. I’m going through the motions… decorating and wrapping gifts, but it doesn’t even feel like Christmas.
I think I’m in the holiday spirit more this year than ever, but credit that a lot to having a little toddler SO excited about it all. We have lots of fun Christmasy things going on for her. But I also make a big point of remembering what it is all about. Jesus!
I’m starting to get into the spirit. Slowly, but surely!
I’m totally NOT lacking holiday spirit this year, but I thought I might since it is my first one out of the house.
Ummm, DITO! Read my latest post: http://www.nutritionnutontherun.com/2010/12/04/back-to-december/
Music and baking is what gets me to the right place, mentally. Being with family? Also helps.
Baking ALWAYS gets me in the Christmas spirit:)
I’m not really in the spirit either. I’ve done Christmas shopping and have some decorations up but it just hasn’t hit me that the holidays are actually here. It’s weird! Watching holiday movies usually helps me get more excited.
I was lacking spirit too, and then decided to put up my tree while listening to Christmas music, and bam, I’m feeling all fuzzy and warm inside.
I’m all about the holiday spirit right now! As soon as Starbucks brings out the holiday red cups, I’m ready. I love Christmas music (Josh Groban, Celtic Woman, Mormon Tabernacle Choir), baking, shopping for Christmas presents, wrapping paper, and decorations. Have you tried watching Elf? Always makes me happy and full of Christmas cheer!
i’m playing music so i’m in the spirit
