Something I’ve been meaning to address since I made the shift from GMH to GML is my new tagline:
“It’s the simple things that make life extraordinary.”
I had a few possible taglines in mind, but this was always the one that stuck out the most (the panel of loved ones I asked seemed to agree as well). One of the reasons I loved this particular tagline is the fact that it’s almost like an oxymoron. In today’s world, it’s most definitely not the simple things that make life extraordinary. We’re constantly seeking one extravagant experience and material possession after the other in hopes that that will somehow fulfill us.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to get all philosophical on you. In fact, the other reason I decided on this tagline is because it acts as a reminder to me. I must admit that I’m definitely guilty of not always appreciating the simple things in life. I find myself almost constantly facing discontentment until I complete a particular “mission.” And then, as I’m sure you can relate to, the end of one mission marks the beginning of the next, and the cycle of discontentment continues.
Okay…tangent, sorry. The bottom line is that while I’m certainly not going to stop myself from seeking extravagant experiences (i.e. travelling the world with my future TDH** husband), I want to remember that those things in and of themselves are not what make my life fulfilling or extraordinary. Rather, it’s the appreciation of the little things in life that result in a sense of clarity, fulfillment, and joy.
Savor each bite of food.
Strike up a meaningful conversation.
Utilize laughing as your primary form of ab exercise.
Remember moments.
Seek joy, rather than just happiness.
I know that appreciating the simple things is easier said that done, but I can’t help but think that it’s certainly worth the effort! And, I don’t know about you, but isn’t it when the simple things are appreciated that the extravagant things seem to naturally come about? Just a thought.

breakfast batter bowl.
Breakfast this morning was a good one.
It’s sort of overnight oats.
It’s in the same family as loaded yogurt (or as you might call it, a yogurt mess).
But there’s just something a bit different that makes it…a batter bowl.
This particular bowl started with a base of plain Greek yogurt. Then I added 1/2 of a cooked sweet potato, 1/2 of a cooked apple, 1/2 of a mashed banana, and dry oats.
Next, add about 1/4 cup of almond milk to loosen things up.
Then go crazy and stir it all together. Warning: things will get messy.
Finally, top with melty nut butter. No explanation necessary.
I’d say what takes this from a bowl of loaded yogurt to a batter bowl is the addition of sweet potato, apple, and banana. It made the consistency much more…well, batter-like!
E&G TV: scarf it.
Check out my latest addition to Emily And Gracie TV, where I give a quick run-down of how to wear one of my fall favorites: scarves!
Have a great Friday, sweetpeas! xoxo G
- What do you think makes life extraordinary?
- Do you like scarves? What’s your favorite fall accessory?

I don’t live overnight oats but that bowl looks good! And I think I just like that you call it “batter.”
LOVE your tag line!
I love scarves, mostly because I’m always freezing, but I’ll continue to pick up some “cool” tips from you
You know I stand behind that! A perfect tagline for you and the blog. I know I can always use that reminder as well.
Scarves and hats are my favourite…or just anything that is going to keep me warm!
batter bowl sounds better anyway!
love the scarf vid! i think i own one.. but never wear it bc it’s so dang hot out
That batter bowl looks good. I love how you combine everything! I need variety in my diet so I will def try this out! Thanks girl! =)
I love that you now do fashion tips. It makes your blog very unique! I have like 5 scarves in my closet and half the time I never know what to do with them! So this helped! =)
I really like your tagline. It’s a good reminder for me, too!
Oh, and my favorite fall accessories are a good pair of boots and SCARVES. I love scarves:).
boots + scarves are hands down my favorites - especially together!! Maybe my next vid will have to be about boots
“Utilize laughing as your primary form of ab exercise.”
Love it!!! By the way my husband makes me laugh daily, I should have six-pack abs by now HAHA!
You know, growing up in Texas, I never ONCE wore a scarf until I moved up to PA and found out what “cold” was. I admit, I have only worn them for warmth, but I’m starting to like them more for their fashion appeal, too! I definitely needed this “scarf tutorial” because I could never get it to look as cool as others. THANKS!
I LOVE scarves - they’re definitely one of my favorite accesories ever, I even try to pull them off in the summer, hah!
I totally agree about appreciating life and the little things as opposed to the larger picture in life. Seeking something huge as means to fulfillment isn’t always going to work. Amen sister!
I totally know what you mean! I work hard so I can have nice things in my life and take fun trips, but at the end of the day some of the best experiences I have involve something as silly as the hubs chasing our dog around or a cheap bottle of wine and a movie on the couch
p.s. I’ve lurked like a total creeper on your blog for a while so I figured I better come out of the woodworks and say hi!
i constantly try to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the simple things. savoring every bite is a must! learning to relax is something i have yet to accomplish! hope you have a wonderful friday!
Loved the scarf post. I am a little inept at fashion, so that was fun.
Do you air dry your hair, do you curl it? what do you do?
Sometimes I air dry, sometimes just a blow dry - but in this video I did use a curling iron!
MMm..your breakfast looks like a hot mess! A GOOD one, that is
I love love love scarfs (I think I have about 10!). But I always have to wait until fall weather to wear them
I’m not sure I could pull off wearing one of my lighter ones with a tank top!
I’d like to see a video on how you do your hair-your hair is so cute!
That’s such a good point! It’s the little things like coffee dates with friends and nice weather that make a day good! I’ve been all about appreciating the small details lately.
I like your tagline, too! The scarf tutorial was great, but I do have one question. Do you have any tips about what type of shirt to wear when you are wearing a scarf for fashion? Or does anything go? Thanks!
Hi Carolyn!
I personally think that scarves can go with just about any shirt - even short-sleeved or sleeveless! Also - it’s nice to have neutral-colored scarves that can go with anything
I looove scarves too but I’m always a little confused on how to wear them without looking like i’m bundleling up to go to Antarctica… so thanks for the tips!
I have a question!
Do you ever wear the thin, silk scarves that are actually square-shaped? I never have, but I think they’d be a nice accent to my work wardrobe. But they’re not long enough for either of these methods. I have no clue how to wear them!
Hey Katie! YES - I know exactly what type of scarf you’re talking about. I own a few, actually
I should’ve added that in the video, duh!
I just tried typing a description for you, but it didn’t seem to be working too well (haha). I’ll try to remember that for a future video, for sure!
