oh, hi!

My name is Gracie. I'm a twenty-something recent college grad on a mission to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life...while having fun along the way!

like a boss.

Last night I mentioned how my mom is my best friend. And tonight? Tonight I’m going to boast about my pops :) I’ve been feeling kind of discouraged about a few things, but after a 15-minute conversation with my dad about “my future,” I’m feeling 100% better and re-motivated. Thanks, dad!

dinner.

My parents and I had dinner at our favorite local diner. As usual, my mom and I split the crab cake platter. Who would think that a dinky little diner would have the best crab cakes ever?! (Trust me on that one – I’m a huge crab cake snob).

My plate:

I also had a baked potato and some soup + bread.

For dessert – rice pudding with whipped cream…aka the most typical diner dessert ever.

lunch(ish).

Today was a snack through lunch kind of day. I blame my first “snack” of 1/2 sweet potato with peanut butter, which filled me up more than I anticipated.

Other snackage included Uncle Sam’s cereal and cashews (x3).

bossy.

You don’t mind if I do a bit of bearing my soul, do you? Okay great :) To make a long story short, one of the things I’ve been discouraged about is the fact that I thought I’d be much further along in life by now. I mean, I’m 23 years old, single, don’t have my “dream career,” and I live at home. I can’t help but question - what is mine? What am I the boss of?

Now, in the grand scheme of things, I believe that God is *thee* boss of my life and my destiny. I know that He has a perfect plan for me. But for the sake of boosting my confidence, I’d like to take a minute to establish what I have the ability and free will to control in my life. Let’s see…

I’m the boss of my faith.

I’m the boss of who I choose to surround myself with.

I’m the boss of how I treat my body.

I’m the boss of how I treat others.

I’m the boss of where I choose to live.

I’m the boss of my finances.

I’m the boss of my likes, dislikes, and values.

I’m the boss of Girl Meets Health :D

The bottom line is that I’m in a really cool place in life where, although I might not yet see the big picture, I have no strings attached. I can essentially go and do whatever I please without having to ask anyone’s permission. That is, until I have an employer, of course. Have I mentioned that I’m quite hirable? ;)

So, with all that being said, instead of looking at this weird transition in life as confusing and scary and discouraging, I’m going to look at it as…the world is my oyster. My future is inevitable, so I might as well be the boss of it!

  • What are YOU the boss of?
  • Who do you turn to when you need encouragement/motivation?

  • I saw your tweets earlier today and I meant to reply to you - sista you are NOT alone. Not everyone has their dream job (hellooooo world I’m here!) and as much as neither of us believe it - we WILL find something, and it will work out for the better.

When I need encouragement, I either turn to my boyfriend or music. And generally, that music is accompanied by my New Balance 1226s and pavement. In terms of where I’m the boss - it’s definitely my finances. I’m SO strict about where, when and how I spend my money. I call it cautious. And there’s nothing wrong with that - right?

Keep your chin up girl :)

  • I am the boss of my own company… which is pretty awesome :) But it took me some searching and risks to figure it out…

I quit my advertising job that was paying pretty decently to go work part time at a GYM while I figured it out… THAT’s a RISK! …but it worked out ;)

Keep moving forward- you’ll figure it out!

  • I am the boss of my cat haha. I really like how positive you are about where you are in life. I’m 22 and split my home between my parent’s house when I’m not in school and my boyfriend’s parents house when I am in school so either way I still basically feel like a kid. I’m stuck between wanting to “grow up” faster and not wanting to at all!

  • I am the boss of my education! I can choose how hard I work in each of my classes, and can choose the direction I want to take.

I turn to my mom or my boyfriend when I need encouragement!

  • Oh this is such a hard time right now for job searching. Don’t beat yourself up. 23 is still super young, and you have so much time to decide what you want to be the boss of. :)

  • Gracie, Gracie, Gracie, your just a baby yet.

I am 29 years old. Two university degrees. Hate my profession. Struggling to get a full time job. In enormous debt. Trying to figure out how to pay the debt and stuff so I can eventually stop working in the profession I hate. Crashed my car. No car now at all. Can’t afford another.
Lost my ability to run or cardio, etc etc etc…

No one has it figured out. And some of us are in terrible spots we never imagined.

One day at a time. otherwise it is too overwhelming.

  • i’m the boss of my household! :) just joking (kind of)

    i’m the boss of ME!

  • Those crab cakes look AMAZING!!!
And even though I love sweet pots - I have YET to try any nut butter on one..
From reading your blog I bet you have SUPER parents that raised you well and give good advice - you have such a positive vibe - so even though things don’t happen as fast as we would want them - as you know and stated Gods timing will prevail.;)

When I need great advice my hubs is my go to person- he
    could be a life coach!
God bless and remember Jer 29:11 !!! ;)

  • I love this! I agree with most on your list. And you know, I think life is full of weird transitions, but we often don’t think about them. I’m sure you have so many amazing things coming in your future. For me, I just got married-It has been a wonderful and interesting transition. I can only think of the many that still lie ahead of me-parenthood? New career? Moving? I sometimes wonder if anyone has it figured out :)

  • What a nifty post! I like the idea of being the boss of those things. We do have control…God just guides us. And I know He is guiding you and you are open to taking His lead. :)

  • Meg

I am the boss of my life, my health and most importantly…my happiness :D I LOVE crab cakes…total crab cake snob right here too, girl. I totally understand ;)

  • Noelle

The ny times has a really interesting article up on their site now about 20 somethings and how our generation is so different from those prior, why culturally this happened etc. You should definitely check it out. It made me feel much better about not having a dream career , being married or buying a house (all these things I thought I’d be doing in my 20′s as a kid).

  • Life takes us in so many unexpected, unpredictable directions. Every day, I have to remind myself to be grateful I’m invited along for the ride!

Still, I can understand that feelings of disappointment if things don’t go as “planned.” Just have to have faith!

  • Alina

Hey Gracie! New reader here, i’ve been following your blog for a week now…. i’m soooooo glad i found it! you’re amazing! your posts are always so thoughtful and interesting and FUN to read.
Now on to being a boss… when you listed the things that you don’t have by now i just want to tell you that there’s nothing wrong with that, maybe the opposite! just because someone has it by your age doesn’t mean that you have to have too! i used to compare myself to others but now i only think about MY dreams, goals! and it’s amazing! i love how you say that you’re the boss of your future! totally inspiring! with that being sad i’m the boss of my dreams and emotions! hope that makes sense!
lots of love from across the world! that being Russia ha ha! :)

  • Peanut butter on your sweet potato? Awesome! You have def given me something to think about today… I am the boss of…

  • Girl I totally feel ya. Lately I feel like I haven’t been the boss of anything since, as a student, I’m still financially dependent on my parents.

But this post perked me up! I may not be the boss of my finances, but I AM the boss of my body, my outlooks, my happiness, and my choices! :D

  • I’ve recently been thinking about the fact that I put all kinds of pressure on myself to have the “big things” accomplished by a certain time, but why??? Why have I decided that I need to buy a house by the time I’m 26 and need to be pregnant at 27? Why do I feel I must have the perfect career before age 30? By engaging in this type of thinking, I’m missing out on the one time in my life when I really can be carefree, when I don’t HAVE to be weighed down with responsibilities. I need to live in that moment and enjoy it more!

  • To be this contemplative at 23 means you are already much further in life than you could ever imagine. ;)

  • I love this attitude towards your life! I have to tell you that I’m 28, still don’t have my “dream job” and I’m coming to realize the life is this journey and you have to live in the moment because things are always going to be changing and moving and out of our control. I think you are on the right track owning the things you do have control over while working towards goals (job, etc) and leaving the rest to God! xoxo

  • Ali

Ok, first of all I love the title! It reminds me of the Andy Samburg “Like a Boss” which makes me laugh endlessly.

Anyhow, you are the boss of a lot and I promise you will figure everything out. Enjoy this point in your life, you are only 23 once. Things will fall into place, promise :)

  • Meg

Overall, though, I know God has a plan for me, so, like you, I’m just living the “no strings” approach as well :)

  • Gracie

Hi Alina!! Thanks for reading :D And thanks so much for the encouraging words. You’re a doll!! xoxo

  • Gracie

Oooh, thanks for the suggestion! I’m going to search for that article now, actually :)

  • Gracie

    p.s. found it! thanks!

  • Gracie

Hey Janice! I really appreciate your encouraging words! Yes, I do have amazing parents - I never want to take that for granted! God bless :) xoxo
