back to school. or…not.

Hi sweets! If you follow me on Twitter, you know I woke up in a wee bit of discomfort…

Unfortunately for me, though, hurt so good = still hurts! I guess I figured because I did mostly walking and low-intensity jogging that I didn’t need to stretch. Clearly, I was wrong :?

work it out.

To let my lower body rest a bit, I focused on upper body + abs for a quick workout this morning. I did:

  • 20 push ups
  • 3 sets of 8 lateral raises with resistance band
  • 3 sets of 10 bicep curls with resistance band
  • 60-second plank
  • 10 minutes stretching

Moral of the story: no matter how “easy” the exercise may be…still stretch!

breakfast.

Despite my admission that carby breakfasts don’t tend to fill me up, I couldn’t get pancakes off my mind this morning. But with a decent amount of protein and fat added to this cake, I think we have a winner.

My [massive] pancake included:

  • 1 serving gluten-free pancake mix
  • 1/2 container Caramel Oikos
  • 2 tbsp almond milk
  • sprinkle of chia seeds
  • cinnamon
  • toppings: peanut butter, macadamia nuts

This baby sure was delicious (the addition of Caramel Oikos was a fab idea, if I do say so), but the real test is seeing how well it holds me over until lunch!

a student no more.

This upcoming September is the first in my entire life that I won’t be going back to school. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it just a little bit. One of the things I miss the most right now is the traditional “back to school shopping,” which took place even up until my senior year of college. In addition to your basic school supplies like binders and pens, each year also brought some must-haves before entering a new grade.

It started innocently enough with the Little Mermaid lunch box (of course, mine was one of those old-school plastic ones).

Then came the Jansport backpack.

Who could forget the Clueless-inspired feather pen?

The ever important magnetic locker mirror.

And the essential Hollister and/or Abercrombie wardrobe.

Did I mention that I also searched far and wide before finally finding the Nsync necklace charm? That one was a toughie, but I sure did feel like a million bucks when I walked into school wearing the coveted bling.

I think my current back-to-school list would include things like a 24-pack of Larabars and a wireless air card. But here we are – 18 years and one Bachelor’s degree later - and I have nothing to go back to. Although that makes me a teeny tiny bit sad, I must say that it’s pretty…stinkin’….AWESOME!! :D

  • What were your favorite back to school must-haves?
  • Do you stretch after every workout?

  • Hehehe I love your back to school must-haves! This is also the first time in my life that I won’t be going back to school, and it feels so weird!! It’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that from now on, it’s all work… kinda depressing, and kind of exciting at the same time. If I was going back to school now, my must-haves would include plenty of Luna Bars and Simply Bars, as well as some stylish Lululemon gear to go from the gym to class in.

  • haha omg those pens with the fluffy top! I also always had a trapper keeper and LL Bean backpack wiht my initials on it. Locker mirror-CHECK, cool key chains to hang on my back pack-check…brown paper bags for lunch (NOT a lunch box-that was uncool) CHECK haha love this post!

  • I used to get awfully anxious at going back to school..the only thing that kept me sane was new clothes ;)

  • Haha :) I also had a plastic lunchbox, but mine was Snow White ;) I was all about Trapper Keepers back in the day,and Lisa Frank too! And there was many-a feathered pen that made it into my backpack….those and the slap-wrist bracelets. *Sigh* Those were the good ol’ days (but these are too :D )

  • I loved getting school supplies! I loved funky folders and pens, etc. I wanted ALL the new cool stuff!

  • I loved going to Staples and shopping for the best pens and notebooks and matching binders. Oh, and of course-back-to-school clothing shopping. I’ve been out of high school for a while now and I definitely miss it.

  • As the one who has been purchasing those back to school items for six kids since 1990, I am happily getting to the end of their back to school time. I think it is time, now, for me to go back and get my Master’s as I miss school.

  • I make it a point to stretch after every run…but sometimes life gets in the way. I’ll stretch at some point during the day or take a yoga class. I loved back-to-school time. Buying school supplies was my favorite part and organizing all my colorful folders, pens and notepads. :)

  • fluffy pens! i had a bunch of those and loved waving them around my face too. such a dork. i was sad the first year that i wasn’t going back to school too. i kinda still wish i could!

  • Back-to-school must haves: new running shoes and a new wardrobe all from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale in addition to the sweet smell of new pencils, paper, binders and backpacks.

  • I totally hear you about the whole not going back to school thing and how weird it is. The worst part came when I realized I had no more summer or winter breaks, though!

  • HA! I just did a post about back to school also. Except I think I went back a couple years farther then you did.

    Nice!

  • OK, that Clueless shout out was priceless.

I totally miss back to school. New clothes, new stuff, ahh. I really loved a good Trapper Keeper way back in the day. And then the erasers that were so cute, too cute to use, haa.

  • I recently took a year off between my Bachelors and Masters so being back this fall is like Woah! I had forgotten the art of frequenting the library at all hours in sweats with a giant coffee in hand and a stack of books. My healthy back to school list includes apples and pears and squeezable peanut butter (for snacking on the go) and BPA free water bottle. Also google calendar is my best friend.

  • I have to have some silly pen for my exams at the uni. Makes me happy, and it makes the nervousness go away.
A huge notebook is also a must, preferably a cute one :)

  • Oh I am so with you… I LoVeD back to school shopping.

How I miss my favorite item… the beloved Trapper Keeper :)

  • I totally had that Nsync charm necklace. I pretty much had Nsync everything. I miss buying Trapper Keepers and erasers and homework books!

  • I stretch before and after workouts - I don’t know how some people don’t!

As far as school supplies go, I get to still go… it’s the perfect excuse as a teacher!

  • My first lunchbox was Ariel too! I think I had a Rainbow Brite one as well.

I remember Lisa Frank. I adored her notebooks and everything. And Trapper Keepers. LOL

  • Haha I miss those fluffy pens! When I was younger, Spice Girl merchandise (pencils, backpacks, rings) and those “Spice Mice” type t-shirts were back to school musts for me! Now I just like to hit up the mall for some new clothes. :D

  • OMG FEATHER PENS! Those were such a HUGE deal back in the day. Thank you for that memory :)

I am terrible about stretching… and I’m sore today. Go figure :(

  • Thanks for making gluten free stuff! I have an allergy to wheat so its nice to see a lot of recipes that give me lots of options when I feel deprived! =)

  • Thanks for making gluten free stuff! I have an allergy to wheat so its nice to see a lot of recipes! You give me lots of options and ideas, which are great when I feel deprived! =)

  • I’ll admit, I was the nerd that LOVED school supply shopping. Pens, notebooks, folders… I was a happy girl! Lisa Frank was the much coveted supply designer of choice. Sigh, I miss school days!

  • Plastic lunchboxes!! Ahh!! I wonder if ANYONE still makes those…insulated, my ass. Plastic was so much cooler. And my dad still has my green Jansport backpack from elementary school. True story.

I don’t stretch after every workout, but I try to make up for it with extra long sessions on the days that I do. I really should make it more of a priority though!

  • I always love having lunchboxes!! My favorite one was a Beauty and the Beast one. It was pretty awesome, not gonna lie! And I always HAVE to get pens, pencils and a calendar before going back to school. Getting new pens were always the best part. Do you remember Spacemakers too? They were really popular at my school to put all your pens in.

  • I try to stretch after every workout, but sometimes im just too plain lazy! But I can always tell the difference in my body when I stretch or don’t stretch!

  • Amanda

It must be weird to not go back to school, but enjoy it! I am in my last couple of months of university, and while I know I will miss some parts, I definitely am looking forward to having my weekends and evenings back! My friend graduated last year from engineering, and this year she’s like, “I haven’t cried in months! It’s SO weird!” Haha, makes you realise how stressful college can be in addition to the fun. Ups and downs to every season of life! Enjoy where you’re at Gracie :)

  • HAHA! This post totally brought me back. Any one remember Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers (and folders/pens/stickers)?? Those were my fav!

I do try to stretch after every workout. I feel so much better the next day!!

  • Gracie

Oh, good! Glad to hear it :) I don’t eat strictly gluten free, but I do use g-free ingredients from time to time. I would love to try it for a couple of weeks to see how it effects my energy (and some *other* issues), but I just haven’t been disciplined enough yet.

  • Maura

Random question! My husband and I were just trying to figure out the differences between sweet potatoes and yams; I said I was pretty sure you wrote a post on this exact topic awhile ago. Is there a way that I can search your archives by topic? Thank you!! :)

  • Gracie

Hi Maura!! That was one of my Trendy Tuesday posts…here’s the link! :)

  • Ohh that monster pancake looks GOOD. And I’m trying to be really good about stretching before and after my workouts. I recently pulled my hamstring, and it’s just a reminder that I need to stretch and warm-up more in my old age. (I’ll be 30 in November…ahhh!)

  • I remember going ALL out with locker-decorating in middle school. I had a mirror, posters, pictures, hangers, perfume, glitter…haha it was ridic

And I def. stretch after every workout (and before) otherwise I def. feel it the next day!

  • That pancake looks SERIOUSLY amazing!
And I used to thrive on getting back to school stuff and organizing my binders and pens and whatnot..

  • I’m going into my second year of grad school (and my last year of school) and I must say it is sad! I love back to school shopping!

  • This post definitely brought back memories! Since I was an uber dork, I needed to have Lisa Frank binders and pencils…and then I always bought new PE clothes for school- ah memories!
