Last week I watched the movie Remember Me. You know, the one that everyone saw solely because Edward Robert Pattinson was in it.
Well, in addition to being a surprisingly good film, something stuck out to me. The lead female character, Ally (who bears a striking resemblance to this hottie) always ordered dessert before her meal. I remember thinking – why don’t I do this?! In fact, as someone with a constant sweet tooth, why not just eat sweet food all the time? Who ever said that “normal” meals have to be savory?
Okay. Tangent. Sorry
The reason I was reminded of that part of the movie, though, is because my lunch today started with dessert.
lunch.
I made a batch of HEAB’s Maple Nut Oaties, and they were nothing short of phenom.
I followed Heather’s recipe pretty much to the T, except that I halved it. I also chose dates and cinnamon-brown-sugar almonds as my mix-ins. Let’s just say it took a great deal of self control to avoid eating the entire bowl of dough.
I ate one straight out of the oven and two more after they cooled.
How can something so good be so…good?!
Ironically enough, the other part of my meal was the most salty thing I’ve eaten in a while.
I had a ginormous bowl of baby spinach topped with homemade Cheesy Chive Dip. To make the dip, I combined:
- about 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon freeze-dried chives
- 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese
- pinch of salt
To add to the saltiness factor, I crushed a bag of salt & pepper pop chips into the salad.
chips > croutons, in case you were wondering.
breakfast.
Rewind to breakfast this morning, where I broke into this bag of chocolate Vega powder.
This was part of my HLS swag bag, and I was excited to give it a try. I must admit that I was also a bit wary of the taste (I’m not the world’s biggest fan of chocolate), but the mix actually made for a to die smoothie.
My smoothie contained:
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1/2 scoop Vega mix
- 3/4 banana
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- 2 ice cubes
I also had a slice of fluffy bread topped with almond butter…to round out the brown-themed breakfast, I guess?
Back to work! Ta ta for now sweetpeas. xoxo G
- Do you prefer sweet or savory foods?
- Did you see “Remember Me?” What did you think?

I prefer savory foods, but I like to mix them. That combo of something salty or spicy with a tad of sweetness is absolutely amazing.
I didn’t see Remember Me. I was in the camp that didn’t see it BECAUSE RPatt was in it. :p
You’re the first person I’ve met who doesn’t like chocolate!!
I can’t wait to try that shake mix though. I got the chocolate flavor in my bag, too.
My smoothie mix was the Tropical one! Hopefully I’ll know what to add to the mix to make it tasty. I’m usually not too sure about the powdered stuff.
What, not a chocolate fan?? Who is that even possible??
Sometimes I go out to dinners with the girls and we each order a big dessert as our meal…and some fun girly drinks
I loved that in the movie too. So cute!
And you’re right. Katy does look like her!
Sweet! I have a killer sweet tooth. Haha.
I definitely prefer savory foods!
Never saw that movie but it’s on my list. I don’t really find RPatz attractive outside his Edward Cullen gig (yup, i said it!) but I’d be interested in seeing what he brings to the table in a non-Harry Potter/Twilight role.
Sweet! Sweet! Sweet! Always! Always! Always!
I wanted to see that movie but my sister said that its really sad so I didn’t.
But I’ve heard good things about it so maybe I will anyway.
I’ve not been the biggest fan of greek yogurt but the cheesy chive dip sounds so good! I love that you use it in place of dressing. Super creative! I will have to try it!
I used to be sweets only kind of gal, but lately my taste buds have leaned more in the savory direction. I still love ice cream and chocolate though, all the time
Those oaties look awesome, I need to make some now that I’ve decided I don’t totally hate baking.
Gah those look to die for!! I love my sweets!
I would rather forget about “Remember Me,” jk! Robert Pat, mmmmm.
Thanks for giving me some good, tasty ideas on how to play with my HLS swag.
I love adding chips or crackers to my salads too! Trader Joe’s has yummy edamame crackers that I add for some crrrunch.
I think it’s absolutely genius to start a meal with dessert! I mean, what if you died before you got to the real meal? You’d have missed out on the good stuff!
I need to try my smoothie mix! Mine is a fruity mango flavor, I believe…I <3 sweets. Love them. But just as soon as I'm done with them, I want something salty. And the cycle continues.
I want to eat those Maple Nut Oaties NOW!!! They look awesome!
I definitely prefer sweet foods. My meals (other than breakfast) are usually savory just because I feel like they’re “supposed” to be, but my snacks are ALWAYS sweet!
Forget the Oaties…I want some of that cheesy chive dip!
Last night, I totally ate a bowl of dessert oats as my dinner. It was perfect. I used to make myself eat veggies plus a protein when I really wanted was something sweet. Now, I just eat the bowl of cereal if that’s what I really want.
I liked the Vega Shake & Go smoothie as well. I had the vanilla almond flavor and was surprised that I enjoyed it as I’ve never been a big fan of hemp protein powder.
Hope you had a good day fueled by all your yummy brown foods.
I much prefer sweet foods but I’d never eat dessert first. The goal is to end the meal with the sweet taste in your mouth. I wouldn’t want to ruin that aftertaste with dinner.

gracie - just started reading your blog. just wanted to tell you how much I look forward to seeing your posts!!!
We saw the movie Remember me and really like it too!! I love the idea of dessert before a meal ; )
I’ve been wanting to see Remember Me, it actually sounds like a good storyline. R. Pat helps a bit, though.
I prefer savory foods, but definitely love the sweets!
Jenn
Bahhhh - I remember looking at all the HLS pic thinking “man, that girl looks alot like the cutie in Remember Me who got all that alone time with R.Patt”. You confirmed

Ha! Awww, that’s really really sweet. I’ll take it!
I have to go watch that movie now, STAT!
Umm and I miss you a lot..just saying!!
Love your blog! How big is a scoop of protein powder? Is it one tablespoon, or two, or half?
Hi Kelly!! thanks so much for reading
